Silkie thread!

(Light sarcasm here) Isn't that a wonderful surprise. It may feather in black through.

I had two partridge chicks this year feather in black with heavy leakage. No idea where that came from.

It's the recessive white issue that irritates me.

It actually died. I think something was wrong with it because the hens were pecking at it yesterday. Either that or because of its color.

Hello all!

These are the two I'm most confused about. Their mom has a bigger comb, so it makes it harder for me.

Now this seems like a cockeral to me!

My silkies are in with an assortment of bantams (couple in avatar) but they were born in there (that yellow chick is one of them). There's also a bigger black copper maran in there, but she was also born in there. They seem to all get along ok.

Here's a question: which breeds do Silkies get along with? Someone locally is giving away a 2 year old bantam cochin hen who's stopped laying. I've read that they are docile but I assume this means "with humans". Or is it best to just keep Silkies with Silkies?

My silkies don't get any special treatment and are in with the rest of my flock which consists of ameraucanas, ayam cemani, LF cochin, brahma, cream legbar, welbar, CX, RSL etc. They are the only bantam fowl out there but do just fine with everyone.

Thanks for the answers! My main concern is that I just read here that Silkies can have openings in their skulls and that a couple have been killed by larger/different breed birds pecking their heads. So I didn't want to adopt a bird of a different breed if they won't get along. Mine aren't fully grown yet so I'm guessing they're more likely to have open skulls.

I like the idea of adopting a bird who's definitely a hen, and 2 years isn't that old (I think), Right now I'm still guessing at the sex of my two Silkies. I'm fairly certain my white one is a hen but I'm still unsure about the partridge.

After breeding black and cuckoos for over 5 years I hatched out a freakin partridge the other day. I'm guessing it came from the new roo.

And meanwhile, I bought a bird who I was told was cuckoo and had the banded feathers (still does, on the wings) and has turned out to be a partridge. No problem, they're just pets and I like the colour anyway. And he's still cuckoo, just not the colour. :plbb

Hi! I just hatched my first silkie chicks and was wondering if anyone has any guesses on what colors they'll be.
There are 4 silkies- the 2 yellow with tiny black dots on their heads, the yellow with grayish back, and the black back-grey wings-brown head. My guesses are 2 buff, 1 splash, and the tri colored one I have no idea.

*please ignore the 2 plain blacks those are appenzeller/spitz
TIA!
