Silkie thread!

My hubby doesn't want me too keep any silkies because he says their coops and runs always smells worse than the other chickens. Have any of experienced this? How often do you clean the coops and runs and do you put anything down for the smell?

I have found just the opposite...Silkies are smaller and produce less waste, and the smell is not as strong as other breeds. I also use sweet PDZ (powder) sprinkled over the litter. It is found at the feed store where you get feed and shavings and is normally used to absorb ammonia smell and liquids in horse stalls. It is inexpensive and works great.

Never heard the like. Chickens are chickens. Poop smells based upon a number of factors, such as how well it was or was not digested (which is related to the particular feed and how digestible it is or is not, or t the health of a particular bird), how often the pen is cleaned and the square footage per bird. I have six birds in a HUGE horse stall (15X30). They have been there about 6 weeks. So far I have not found any need to clean the pen--there simply are not enough birds for their poop to get out of hand. On the other hand, the brooders need attention daily, and would benefit from attention more frequently than that.

The sweet pdz is GREAT!!!!

I only have two silkies but i plan on entering the white pullet in a judging contest and the cuckoo maran cockrel in showmanship!
THIS ISNT LETTING ME POST PICTURES!!! HOW ON EARTH DID YOU GUYS DO IT?

Thanks for the info on what you thought about silkies. White silkies is my favorite chickens but predators got my best looking ones that I ever had. Most of the ones I have now do not look that pretty. BUT I still want silkies and I use that PDZ in the big coops and runs and the coops I use for the babies. I also use DE. Now too find me some more beautiful silkies!!!!
