Thank you "oldtimegator". Someone said to bath them in flea and tick shampoo, but that's not an option when it's 50 for a high today. I have always just used Sevin dust. I just cleaned their stall yesterday so I'll sprinkle Sevin in their too. Come to think of it, that could be the problem - DAHHHHHHHHH. They all went running into the stall and of course the first thing they did was give themselves a good dust bath... Why the $%^#$%#$ didn't I think of that sooner?

but I am still going to dust them just to be safe.

Thanks for your help.

We are new to chickens and just got two lovely bantam birds. One is a silkie, and I am hoping you can tell me how old (hopefully) she is. We were told she was a female and I am hoping that is the case, so please tell me if you think differently! We just love the personality! Let's see if I can handle posting the pics!

The silkie looks like a she!!! Now I have asked this question I think before but never saw a response. How do you know if your silkie is a pure or mixed with something else. Like I have some that has red combs and waddles but blue ear lobes and some that is a dull color pink combs and waddles and blue ear lobes and I have some that is red everything. The silkies all look like silkies and are all white but I am thinking that one of these in this mix does not belong if you are gonna breed. I want the kind of silkies that has everything right. Do I make any sense? I hope so and hope too get some info. on what too keep together and what too let go.

My silkie cockerel died (well he ran away and he's still not back so I think he's dead)

If you are breeding towards the standard and want to improve your birds, here are the most common Disqualifications:

1. Do not breed any birds that have more or less than five toes
2. The wattles and comb should be a mulberry color to dark black (not red though it is common in cuckoo silkies)... the skin should be black not pink/white
3. Silkies should have a walnut comb. Any other type is not acceptable (single, pea, rose...etc)

If you have a bird that has one of these DQ's, these does not mean that they are mixed. The person just did not select against these qualities when they bred there flock together. A silkie can have all three above DQ's and still be considered a silkie.
