No, they keep themselves nice and clean. I use rubber fortex bowls all year round. You can find them at tractor supply. I keep their waters filled about 3/4 of the way up, and when they freeze you just flip the bowl over and stomp on the bottom and the ice pops right out. Really easy to do. I give fresh water in the morning and afternoons.

I use a heat dog water bowl for my silkies. The front of their fluffy heads get a little wet if the water level is low but other wise it works out gread. My silkies have so far been fine. It's the other chickens in the coop i've been battleing cold in. My production red is finally well and I put her back out today. It's over 50 degrees today so a good day for her to go back out. I still have a silver EE in the house that is nearly well. And the duck is well now. She went back out to the coop today too

well I took sonorans advice and treated for mites and gave them sulmet and 48 hrs later nobody has croaked

Have you tried the tennis ball trick? You can put a tennis ball in the water bowl. The polystyrene in the tennis ball doesn't freeze and helps maintain the water.

Finishing up my Silkie Coop - I'd like to put it on a raised platform within the run and put food/water underneath - what are your thoughts on how high it can be raised? Will they use a ramp if I make it long/wide enough?

Thanks!
