Silkie thread!

Silkie experts...can anyone give us some tips on what to look for in a silkie? We have 1 black silkie hen. She is one of our favorites. The kids are in their first year of 4H. My son showed her at a small show and she didn't do very well.

This is a pretty big question. It might be easier if you posted photos of your girl from different angels and people could say maybe why she didn't do well. Hope you are enjoying BYC!

The other thing you can do is ask the judge (after the judging) next time you take the bird to a show. I know judges can be reluctant to be overly critical with juniors so you might want to ask the question or have your son make sure he tells the judge that he is trying to learn and would like the judge to really let him know what could be improved on his bird. Every judge has his or her own priorities so there is something to be learned from all of them. It may also be that your son's bird had a lot of stiff competition that day. So ask!!

I don't know alot but I always hear people say.... good spacing on the toes.... good tight wings.... ummmm... lets see... I know that they need black eyes and black around their eyes (their eyeliner). One of my splash roos has yellow eyes and that is not a good thing.

I am still learning myself. I let my kids show some in our local fair and the onest I thought were beautiful didnt do as well as the ones I thought weren't as good.

Thanks everyone. As soon as I figure out how to get pictures on here I will get them to you. I did want to ask lots of questions but at this particular show I had to leave before it was over so I couldn't ask.
