Silkie thread!

My sweet Tara has been relegated to the baby pen. All the others were picking on her and she just stood there and let them. She is very patient and kind with the babies.

And here is my "mystery" chick. Now just over 2 months old. He used to look like a cuckoo, but now I am thinking partridge? Any guesses?

I use blunt end baby scissors. The blades are only about 3/4 of an inch long. I only trim cheeks unless the crest is interfering with their straight ahead vision.
For what it's worth, our silkie is not fluffy enough to need a trim

yet but we have Mottled Houdans that have incredible crests and beards and were litteraly blind because of it so to help them not walk into other chicks we gave them a trim, mostly of the beard. I used fingernail clippers. I too was afraid of being so close to their eyes but they are very gentle, love to be held and when I put my hand near their eye to move the feathers they layed in my daughters lap, closed their eyes and waited for their hair cut.

Hi All, just thought I'd share some pics of my Silkies! The top photo is of my two white Silkies, which I hatched last year from some eggs I got off of BYC from Catdance Silkies. Both are drop dead gorgeous and I'm planning to show them later this summer. On the bottom is another little one that I bought last weekend. S/he is 3 months old and very cute. S/he's very correct and I'm hoping she'll fluff out as she grows up a bit more and can join the breeding flock :)

Thanks for sharing your beauties with us and best of luck for the show season!!

Those are cuties !

Well.... The watermelon wasn't a very big hit. Actually, it wasn't a hit at all! lol The chickens refused to eat it out of a dish. They just circled the dish and would not go near it.

So I dumped the pieces on the ground, some of them kinda pecked at it and that was about it. My rooster Curly did like the watermelon! The rest of the flock were much more interested in the frozen veggies. You may notice in the pictures that my chickens will not eat anything off a plate or any other kind of dish. lol I should probably just leave a plate out there for them one of these days.. Maybe they'll get used to it.

Nobody wants the watermelon..

So my white non bearded mama hen right now is what most would call UGLY pet quality. But she throws some really pretty babies. that almost look bearded and have nice crest and feet feathers. So my question is should I keep her in my breeding program or replace her with one of her chick that is 4month olds now . Here is a picture of mother and child.

Looks kinda Crele, but I have never heard of that color in silkies. Just wanted to say he is very pretty!

Look at all those fuzzy butts! So cute. Maybe once they've had it a couple times they'll realize how good it is.
