Although there is only a little bit of blue transfer, it is enough to convince me that Bullet layed this egg. SHE will be called BB from now on and forever!

I'm so happy that both of these blue silkies are girls.

I have 2 splash cockerels to pair them up with when they are older. Mysty Blue has alot of green still around her vent and tail feathers so if it had been her, the green would probably have transferred A LOT when the wet egg (bloom) slipped by. Maybe she'll start laying soon too. BB and Mysty Blue are the the sweetest girls and stand at my feet waiting to be picked up.

Streamers are the longer feathers that 'stream' off the head and hackle area of silkie roosters. Some roosters have a slicked-back look to their crest and most of their head feathers look like streamers. My splashes have nice round crests and then have the streamers coming in sort of from the top center down the neck area.....kind of like a crazy mohawk of contrasting dark feathers. Other silkies have different color variations. Here are some pictures of my two young cockerels (while they were in rooster prison this morning so they wouldn't alarm any neighbors.)

At what age do streamers start appearing? I have a few chicks coming next week and want to know what to look for.

Glad you finally solved it!! :)

I usually see them between 3 1/2 - 5 months. I have one right now that is a few days from 5 months and still no streamers but body type says boy.

My splash chicks (I had 5 splash cockerels) started getting them at 3 months old. My other cockerels/roosters had them by 4 months, but at the time, I didn't know what I was looking for. By 4 or 5 months they should be getting real obvious. Then combined with behavior, wattles and comb development....and of course crowing (*read disclaimer) you have a better idea whether you've got boys or girls.

*Disclaimer- My BB crowed a few times bofore she laid her first egg. So, girls CAN crow, but boys CANNOT lay an egg!

Thanks
We've only had one batch we raised from chicks and didn't know enought to tell till the roo started crowing. We are getting some SQ chicks in next week and we want to know what to look for. Would I look for the same thing in showgirls?

Quote: He's gorgeous! I have a Catdance porcelain boy who is just 14 weeks as of Sunday. He's clearly the most developed of my flock of 7 silkies and so beautiful - it's killing me. As soon as he starts crowing I'll have to re-home him since I'm smack dab in the middle of the suburbs unless I try "overnighting" him in the garage. Not sure how long I could get away with that though. I need to take updated photos of my babies and post them. I've only definitely been able to sex 2 of them. They keep me guessing!

Alright Silkie Experts!! I know they are a little young (4.5 months tomorrow) but I want to know if my guesses are the same as yours. Thanks :)
