Silkie thread!

I love the shades of partridge. I was wondering is there a specific way to get these colors or do you just have to have two lighter colored partridges hatch some chicks kinda thing? Those are beautiful!

the light 3 month old chick looks just like her mother.

BuckWheat is a diluted (thinking blue) wheaton based partridge. The other big 3 are asiatic partridge. Partridge is a variable color, and with selective breeding you can get a steady colors, but partridge has only come back into popularity recently in the past few years even though it is a standard color.

Thank you for clarifying that for me. The genetics kill me! I don't know ya'll figure it out. I love Buckwheat's color. I really am going to have to do some work figuring out the colors. LOL!

If you can find a light bird (say a hen) and a red parti roo or a blue parti boy - you should get some lighter colored birds. Also you could probably get some similar by crossing buff into partridge but it would take a couple generations

I think you are right (silver partridge). I saw several of those in one of her pens.

Oh, I saw this one- it had the most beautiful hackles. The sun just bounced right off them. I think that he was in one of the project pens and he was just stunning!!

Hi Everyone,
Just wanted to say thanks for all the info you all put on this thread. Well, I sold my 3 white hatchery Silkies. Put them on craigslist and they were gone in less than 5 hours. I am going to get more Silkies, just deciding where, how and what colors. I don't think I want to do anymore hatchery Silkie chicks. I want to build a nice flock, as many of you have. Thinking that I will get an incubator and order eggs. I am also thinking that I will get most colors other than white, since I keep reading that you should only breed whites to white. And you can do alot more with all the other colors. I am going to order some Ameraucana or EE pullets chicks so we know the blue eggs are for eating and all the rest will be for fun. My birthday is at the end of the month, so everyone in my family knows I want chickens for my birthday or maybe the incubator. Have any suggestions on incubators or colors, or eggs? Anything? Thanks for your help!

It depends on how many chickens that you can keep. I, unfortunately, am limited and have to keep my numbers small. But if you do not, that opens up a whole realm of possibilities.

One thing to consider, about white, is that they were the original Silkie and so people use white and black to stabilize type in the other colors. A really nice one, of each color, will help your color breeding program. There are far more knowledgeable people, on BYC, who can give you better detail than I can.

I know I mention Karen but she is the only one that I have met personally and seen her birds and talked with her about her past and future plans, with her birds. If you are looking for eggs, she is a good one to start with and you can talk to her about what eggs that you would prefer. See about getting birds, within driving distance to you as shipping is a lot higher on live birds than on eggs. This will also give you two blood lines for breeding. If you do that, find someone, in your neck of the woods, who's 'type' is like Karen's (Catdance).

My last two-cents--- never sacrifice structure and type for a pretty color. If you lose that, you lose the whole apple cart.

Most colors you should breed only to the same color
the exception is Blues - you can do Blue, Black, and Splash to breed them all together.

Really? I figured it had partridge but the black and gray just got me thinking it might have another color.
Usually all the partridges I see start with a yellow chick with brown markings.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong! Aren't there different shades of partridges. Some are darker than others. There must be names for all these different partridge colors. Like the silver partridge (gray) peep already mentioned. I have 3 partridge chicks, about a month old now, all from Catdance eggs. They're all different colors.

Yes, there are different shade of Partridge. I have a buff partridge and a blue partridge. They, to my eyes, are quite lovely. Although I would REALLY love to get a red partridge. Just love the vivid colors (I am a big fan of the Sables in Poms too).
