Silkie thread!

I wanted to get some thoughts on this. I have a couple new birds and one (3months old) I suspect is a roo because I feel some nodules on the lower legs. I think that these nodules are the little spurs coming in, there hasn't been any comb growth though. The other morning, I was letting the birds out of the coop and this new bird came down the ramp behind Eli, my big Roo. Once they got down the ramp Eli turned around and started strutting for and around the new bird, just the same as he does his hens. So, based on how Eli is acting, is it possible the new bird is a hen even though he/she has the nodules?

I had some buyers come by with their 5 month old silkies that I sold them as babies. They thought they were both girls because their roo was breeding them. They were both boys! I wouldn't put any stock in the nodules. Girls can have them too, they just don't develop into spurs. Spurs develop way later.

Girls have that bump, too. I even have girls (not Silkies) that have spurs
Fingers crossed!

Yep, I've had hens with spurs several inches long

Thanks Peepblessed!!!! I think he will be pretty, it was hard to get him to stay still for the camera. If I get these ladies and wanted more cream or even more buff would I mate them to a white?

This is a technical question, as I could not find a technical area to post my question (if there is one, please let me know where to find it).

I use "Your Recent Activity" area to see if there are new posts to my favorite threads. However, there are a number of threads that I will not be visiting again and would like to clean up the list to only reflect those that I am active in, or want to keep up with.

Is there any way to do that?

Thank you!!

Sheila :)

I wanted to get the showman's opinion on a white silkie hen I picked up at an auction a few weeks ago. I talked to the breeder/owner and was told they weren't culls instead a flock down size. Here are some photos of her. If you need any other shots to make a decision, please let me know. It is a welcome break from mowing the lawn.

I know she is a little dirty, if I do show her at our state fair, she will get a bath and be a house pet until the show, but right now I'm letting her be a chicken and forage for bugs and grass. I may make her a head band so she can see... My puppy when right up to her and she didn't know he was there until he huffed at her.

Hopefully you will get a showman's opinion, but I can tell you she has very nice type, good crest and tail. I can't tell anything about her foot feathering or whether or not her toes are correct. The spread wing looks good but she carries her wings too low. Possibly it was very hot that day.

Depends. I have a mixed flock and they get along great... Are you introducing new silkies to an existing LF flock? Or the other way around?
Yes. I am looking at adding two pullets to my current flock, the majority of which are LF. We did a hatch this spring and only one silkie (male) made it. You can see my mix in the signature line. Mostly, the flock kind of ignore Birdie (the one silkie). My one concern is that this winter he is going to get cold by himself as he is the only non-roosting bird, plus, I feel like he is lonely. Everyone else has someone of their breed but he is alone..

Its about 95 where I'm at right now, so everyone is panting. I just did a second water change for the day because of the temp. I'm about to go pick up a watermelon for them. I can get better to pics up in a few minutes. The SG roo she came with has amazing toe feathers. Thanks Peep!
