I was getting ready to place my order with MPC and they have an option although it costs an additional 3.00 for a sexed silkie. It is my understanding that silkies can not be sexed so should I pay the extra 3.00 for these hopefully female silkies?

The chicks are vent sexed. When done by an experienced "sexer" you get about a 90% accuracy rate. You usually can't visually look at Silkies and know the gender until they're older. If it's important for you to get pullets then the extra cost might be worth it. I wanted to order 5 Silkie pullets from them but at the additional cost and shipping it came out to be nearly $20 per chick.

$3? mine cost 6 for a sex silkies from their

an EXTRA 3.00 but when I looked closer it was 3.50 so it came out to be 10.00 a chick. the shipping it whats killing me. Its 37.00 for shipping alone

I ordered two polish from them (I needed two more chicks to meet the 4 chick min for my area, and my sister wanted polish) before I found out that apparently polish are even hard to vent sex. I paid the extra for pullets, and so far, at 12 weeks, mine still appear to be pullets. MPC has been pretty accurate about sexing chicks in my experience.

Yeah the shipping is the pain i ordered 6 chicks for 60 bucks. They better come healthy for that price!

I had hoped that ordering directly from hatchery would be cheaper than my local farm store but its not looking that way

I know the shipping can be frustrating, but you have to realize that you are paying for 'overnight' (sometimes two day) shipping on small numbers of chicks.
The reason hatcheries can ship chicks cheaply is that they have a high minimum order for chicks (usually 25), because those chicks all keep one another warm. Thus they can send them 2-3-day (Priority mail) for much less expense.

When you ship just a few chicks, they get cold much faster, even with a heat pack, and thus need to be rushed to you. The cost is in the overnight shipping from the USPS.
