This 2 year old boy here successfully fought off a hawk today. Glad I didn't loose him. Hen it was going for is ok. Only lost a few feathers. He lost a few, too. So did the hawk.

He doesn't even have spurs. All claws and beak.

lucky you!

I lost the smallest silkie, no idea how. puppies made a hole in their run fence so probably she got out. the other 2 were out as well but they are almost double size of the missing one. it must have been hawk as I didn't find a single feather.

Two hens in the house in separate tubs with 5 chicks each, after having lost 2 to the cold. 3 hens were broody and the chicks didn't know which way was up.. When the first hen got off the nest, the others followed leaving plenty of eggs in the nest. Stuck those in the incubator and brought in the two remaining plus 1 momma.. added the nest 3 eggs to hatch to her, then brought in a second hen and started giving her chicks as they hatched. Another hatched late yesterday and the last egg is still developing. I was unsure about it until I saw a hiccup when candling the egg. It LIVES!!
I was about to take the first momma back out with her 5 week old chicks until.................
I saw the weather report. Low of 17 on Wednesday and 2.6 inches of SNOW... OMG, no way!! Not here in South Alabama.. But I've see ice storms on the coast, so who knows.
My two little darlings in the back pen have been sitting a clutch of eggs, and the 1st of those hatched last night. Cute little chipmunk.

Um, houseguest anyone? This guy has had his head tucked under his wing for two days now. Crop is empty so I suspect something stuck somewhere. Got a tiny bit of castor oil in his mouth, and watched him licking it with his tongue... A few minutes later the coughing started.. Cheep, cough, cough.. then he was up on the side of the box resting..Nice small comb and wattles, big muffs and beard plus a great body.View attachment 4021765View attachment 4021766
This guy is now outside in the baby crib brooder for observation.. He's doing great. Can you believe he didn't hop out of that box once in 5 days? I had to take him out and set him on the floor for exercise but he wouldn't move around.. just groomed the feathers on his feet.. Finally he felt good, was crowing and getting into 'trouble' so out he went.

Here's all but one (close to internal pip now) from the red partridge project pen. Now to wait 6 months to see the final color.. got a couple of fuzzy tops without the vaulted skull. One more I'm unsure about the vaulting.

I have a hen thats addicted to tubing. She wants that nice warm food pumped into her crop.

It started when she wasn't feeling well and started losing weight. I'll tube them to make sure their getting something. Once she felt better that was fine. She was still underweight as she'd been pretty sick. So I'd go out on particularly cold evenings to just top up her crop. She now grabs for my hand if I come in, trying to find the tube.

She's the most difficult bird to tube as she wants to kill that worm and swallow it herself. Then she doesn't want to give back the tube.

we had too much rain. my coops are still muddy. I don't have time to do anything about that as I need to make a few coops. my goat shed flooded as well and 2 of my 3 girls are almost ready to give a birth. too much work for a pair of old hands. on top of that only 50% of my photovoltaic system is working due to damage caused by rain (connectors that are supposed to be waterproof). I am off grid.
