I recently posted a thread about this called "Need Aggressive Rooster Advice", and a member named Uff Da (I don't want to tag her) replied and advised this link to me:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/a-viewpoint-on-managing-roosters.74690/
I have been following the instructions in there for a few days now and haven't had any problems.

(sorry this isn't silkie related, but I'm helping somebody with a silkie rooster, does that make a difference?:D)
Thank you so much for this great article! Very informative! I have already seen a difference in his behavior by changing my own! He was never super aggressive but it’s good to break bad habits now.

Question for those who hatch eggs from their own birds... I have been collecting eggs for the past week (now at 5) and realize there will come a time when the eggs needs will not coincide. For instance, the lockdown period at day 18 requires increased humidity. Should I get a second incubator for the lockdown eggs or can I just increase to a low high range humidity of about 65 for all without jeopardizing the entire batch? I’m thinking I’ll need a second one but wanted to get some feedback... thanks!

Most of my silkies are non-vaulted, some had tiny vaults.

Such a cutie.

Interesting! I'm glad most of my babies still have pretty flat heads :gig

So that means my only vaulted skull Silkie is Flump...my 'best' one.

Congratulations! Such adorable babies!

I definitely agree about your little white baby being vaulted.

Thankyou!

I'll get better pictures when I can :D

You got a dark chick! Did he/she hatch this morning or last night?

I did! I believe possibly around 2am ish since he/she was very slightly damp but still pretty much all dry. I'm just so glad I got one this time!

What is vaulted? What are we looking for here?

It's where the brain isn't properly covered by the skull and creates a 'bump' on the top of the head.

I haven't done that before. I guess it can work either way.

I have two incubators to do staggered hatching. I haven't tried a staggered hatch in a single incubator, I know most advise against it and I'd be a little worried about the air cells growing enough. I'm guessing as long as you are just having one set that is older than the other and only go through 1 hatching you could compensate for the higher humidity by running lower than normal after the first batch hatched. I find where I live I have to run dry a lot of the time to get a good hatch so I wouldn't risk it since I wouldn't be able to lower humidity enough to compensate. I could be wrong though, it would be interesting to hear from someone who commonly does staggered hatches in a single incubator. :)

Oh and so glad to hear your cockerel is dong better with your new approach! I'm still trying to see what works with my guys, the two I have with my pullets are pretty easy to work with and respond well to training usually but the more dominant boys in my bachelor pen are constantly pushing (they don't attack but they display a lot of dominant behavior towards me). I hope I can work with them and they don't turn mean. :fl

Here's Heni and her setup.
