Silkies - They’re simply SPECTACULAR!

Talking coops, I put up a thread about my coop for ideas how to convert the shelter into 1 big coop.. Unfortunately I didn't do chicken math when I got chickens so I now have 3 coops with 2 of them in a shelter area.
Just wondering how high your roosts are / how far can Silkies comfortably 'fall' without getting injuries? Even with a ramp there will be times someone gets knocked off or pecked etc.

Here are my “flock“ photos. I have three pullets and one cockerel and they’re pretty much full grown now. All hatched on Memorial day last year. Taken this afternoon. Hey everyone! I have 7 silkie hens and a splash silkie roo (in addition to an Australorp and Americana roo) and while they aren't as dependable layers as the Australorp they are docile as can be and the perfect broody moms. I have one right now sitting on 8 eggs from the Australorp/Americana!

I have low roosts over shelves in my coop. The silkies (and the marans that thinks she is a silkie) sleep on the shelves, the others on the roosts. The polish as high up as they can get! Somehow they do not poop on each other! There is a ramp up to the shelves and they are only about 3 feet off the ground.

My Silkies all sleep on the floor with the one Cochin that still does. I had to put a shelf over them so they could have a poop free area.

I say my but these two are my daughter's, and I forget what she calls them now as their names change constantly...but the last names I remember are Flufferina and Chloe.



This pullet is mine (the non crested). Her name is Mary Peepins and she's always under my feet, cause she knows who hands out the treats.

Thanks for your reply! Without a ramp mine can't even get up 1 foot jump to a roost haha the chicks can fly though no problem, must be when they start putting on more weight they loose their fly-ability!

Awesome! For me, worst case scenario is that all the other silkies hear the chicks and go broody themselves, then all my eggs disappear! Not like I'm getting many at the moment anyways, but I have three layers at least and I want their eggs!

Anyways, good luck. I learned just to let mama hen do her thing.

My paint hen went broody a few weeks back. Now my blue partridge decided she wants to brood too. Broodiness is 100% contagious, you don't even need chick sounds lol

Ooooof, just the other day my silkie rooster got pooped on... stinky mess. He was fine after a nice bath/blow dry though!

One of my silkies can fly short distances and is the only one of the 4 that can get up on the big roost out in the run. She does it out of sheer determination, I am pretty sure!
