Silkies - They’re simply SPECTACULAR!

4 bearded silkie eggs going into lockdown tomorrow! Hopefully 4 Silkie babies on Saturday! These are all that’s left of the 10 original ones.
These came from a mainland breeder’s mixed pen so I have no idea what colors they will be!View attachment 2542863

Any thoughts on if these two chickies are pure silkie? The eggs came from flock with a breeding group of black silkies, but other roosters were present as well. (Their owner has never seen the other roosters with the silkie hens but anything is possible) Hard to tell in the picture but they do both have 5 toes.

These little ones keep having poop stuck to their feet, ahhhh. They are brooding with 32 other (not silkie) chicks and are the only ones with consistently poopy feet. Is this a silkie problem?

They look like they are pure silkies to me.

It looks like they have silkie feathers coming in based on the wings. If they were crosses you'll probably know soon as they will have non silkie feathering since silkie feathering is recessive and both parents need to carry at least one silkie feathering gene for it to pass to the offspring.

My silkies tend to get poopy feet too especially as babies being in a brooder. It's been a while since I had any non silkie chicks so I can't quite recall but I'm pretty sure this was a problem I had with other feather footed breeds as well (like cochins).

Welcome to BYC! Sad the poor chicks were eaten. Sounds like they needed better protection. Hope you get your silkies one day.

Yeah, they did. They where in a stall in the barn. Maybe once our current chickens dwendle down, I live in the middle of the city, we are only allowed 7.

It was rainy today so I could get a good look at their combs with their wet crests
Ok so I have 5 x 14 week olds, I'm near 100% sure 3 are pullets and 1 cockerel but this one is the smallest overall of all 5 and comb is smaller then my cockerel but bigger then the others plus wattles..

It was rainy today so I could get a good look at their combs with their wet crests
Ok so I have 5 x 14 week olds, I'm near 100% sure 3 are pullets and 1 cockerel but this one is the smallest overall of all 5 and comb is smaller then my cockerel but bigger then the others plus wattles..

I'm no help, I can see why that one is confusing you! The comb and red on the wings seems more cockerel like. The body kind of looks more pullet like to me (though it is still early to be judging body type too much). I know you have some girls that get large combs for females so I'm on the fence with this one. She/he sure is pretty though!

I agree, tricky this one is! Beautiful bird.

I am getting a girl vibe from the photos, but agree the comb and red on the shoulders look more boyish. Best I can do!

No guessed on the gender, I struggle without streamers and create as a guide. But how are you going to clean those muddy crests up? Mine are the same and I can't take pictures to advertise my business because of that.

Photo shoot this morning of the three chicks I have left right now. All hatched last week. Yellow one is pure silkie, black one is half Silkie and half Polish and gray one is half silkie and half ameraucana.
