I keep thinking about these birds now...There are white capped blue polish!![]()
They are gorgeous! I have a thing for blue birds as well! Photo of my blue Birchen Marans pullet, Daisy. She is huge, definitely not a bantam! Though she thinks she’s a silkie as she was brooded with my Silkies and snuggles in the silkie pile with them every night and does not go on the roost like a normal standard chicken!Look what I found a pic of.... Ok, I will definitely wait.. but I think my future set will be ALL blue varieties.. but look how cute!!

Wow she is so pretty!! Funny, the best buddies sleep together in mine.. my Daisy is a D'uccle, and Bella the silkie roosts with her... but Minnie my D'uccle sleeps on the floor w Nala!!They are gorgeous! View attachment 2371879just curious on the colouring of this silkie I've recently acquired. And if I find a cockerel for her what colour would be good for breeding purposes?thanks
This is very interesting... good timing on your post, because now im wondering if my little cochin might actually be a splash instead of self-blue. Would splashes start of as such a faint blue, or would they start off as white? I am seeing tiny bits of darker blue on these new feathers, but i need a little more feathering to figure it out. When i check the Privetts site, they have self-blue OEGB and DUccles, but only "blue" cochins, no self-blue or lavender listed.Hmmm depends on your breeding goals what would be the best to breed.
She could be a light blue or lavender though lavender is a lot less common so I'd guess probably a light blue. The brownish tint could be sun bleaching or it could be some other color bleeding through. The other color bleeding through is more likely if she came from a mixed color pen.
I had read something about lavender having light/white feather shafts in a genetics group. I don't have experience with this personally and it would prompt further research but perhaps it might be useful? I checked the feather shafts on my light blue pullet (a bit darker than yours but still light) and she has dark feather shafts on both sides in her wing and tail feathers.
If you want to find out if she is blue or lavender based you could breed her to a black. If she is lavender she should only produce black chicks (assuming the black is not split to lavender). If she is blue you will get blue and black chicks. Even if the black was a split it is very likely the shade of down on the babies will give a hint into if she is blue or lavender.
If she happens to be blue (which is what I suspect) and you want to breed standard colors it might be fun to put her with another blue for the biggest variety in standard colors. Blue x blue results in 25% black offspring, 25% splash offspring, and 50% blue offspring.![]()
She is a splash. Self blue and splash look very similar at hatch, then the flecks and spots start developing. This is very interesting... good timing on your post, because now im wondering if my little cochin might actually be a splash instead of self-blue. They are both little hams, keep jumping up the side of their brooder so i will let them out. They are finally climbing onto my hands willingly as well!
I still have the feeling the silkies want to eat them.. they just eyeball them a certain way. I have the brooder and their coop side by side. I will let them get a bit more size on before i let the velociraptors out.
