Silkies - They’re simply SPECTACULAR!

Thank you so much! I have acquired quite the “collection” from all over the US lol. I LOVE my chickens. I have a page Long Island Silkies and Polish or Southport Farms where I share my pictures. Thank you again. I feel like a proud mom

Oh I wish I had known about this breed earlier. I think they are beautiful but it’s the temperament that is so appealing. I have one small Sultan with a similar demeanor and I adore her. I would like to add a couple of silkies ! My flock of larger hens ( 12) totally accept Antoinette (sultan) . They were raised together. I’m worried how they would react to new small birds. They would have to free range together. Supposedly Sultans don’t free range well but Antoinette keeps up with the best of them! We keep her trimmed around her eyes but her sight is somewhat limited. The silkies could have a private little roost area for their safety at night. I’m giving it a lot of thought. Is there a certain breeder you recommend? I even have considered slipping silkie eggs under my broody Cochin. But again I wouldn’t want them picked on. Thanks for listening

This may sound crazy, because I LOVE Silkies, BUT, why don’t you look into getting some Houdans? They’re large fowl and have a heavy crest too and their personality is amazing. So friends. I’m not going to lie. Silkies were my favorite. But my Houdans are giving them a run...Also remember heavily crested breeds are picked off by predators a lot easier than others who are able to see easier. Also Silkies can not fly so they are just sitting ducks and can not get away. Here’s the Houdans. Took this pic today. (Oh and a Polish snuck in haha)

I got some beautiful chicks I hatched from eggs from Alabama Silkies (check out their website).

So now two silkies are laying! One of my polish just started too, her little tiny egg is only 22 grams! Smaller then the silkie!
