Silkies - They’re simply SPECTACULAR!

I'm no expert, I have my silkies only since 4 months but I think yes, your baby in the first picture is bearded. 2nd one I'm not sure. Here a picture of my Maku as a chick, he is bearded and when he was a baby I couldn't see that:

But I wouldn't be surprised if the others here will know and can tell you about your second cutie

It’s actually the fluff under the chin that determines. First one is bearded. Hard to tell with the second. Some bearded silkies have more beard than others.

Thank you that's very helpful. So I was on the right track, and I have some chicks that are definitely bearded, and some that could be, but maybe not. Lol.

Alright silkie experts am I correct in that the chick in the first pic is bearded and in the 2nd is non bearded? I have never had silkies as babies before, so I'm trying to learn. Haha

I agree first one definitely looks bearded and it's hard to tell with the second. It may be non bearded or it may be heterozygous for the bearded gene (has only 1 bearded gene). It takes two beard genes to make a full beard. Birds that only have a single gene vary in how large their beards are but they usually at least have a small/partial beard. When bred to a bearded bird half of the time it will pass its beard gene and the babies will be fully bearded and the other half it won't and they will be partially bearded like the partially bearded parent. When bred to a non bearded you get 50% non bearded offspring and 50% partially bearded.

Ok cool! I actually 4 other little silkie babies. Those 2 faces were just the most obviously different to me.

Well I candled all 8 eggs Puff was sitting on and all were not fertile!!! I'm guessing Rooster isn't allowing Biscuit to mate the hens so I'm not getting fertile eggs. (And Rooster isn't fertilising)
I was so ready for chicks! And so was Puff!!
I don't think the hens will like it (because they like Rooster) but I'm going to have to move Rooster to the other coop and bring in Cookie and just hope Cookie and Biscuit will get along ok And give me fertile eggs!
