I took in a newly hatched showgirl to keep one of my chicks company, and it definitely had a nekid neck

I had a rose mallow come up and keep going.. been collecting seeds for my neighbors. I love this thing.

I dont think they will grow for you, unfortunately. They only grow in a couple super small pockets in texas, super small ecosystem. Do you happen to know if marsh mallow (had no idea that name came from a plant!!) grows in your area? Do you have an ecoregion name you can share w me? I'd love to cross reference what might work for both of us so we can trade. Usually it'll be listed at your local ag services site or native gardening group.

Hmmm.. my guess is paint.. dominant white over black. Do you have females of the same color or all black? You could breed them for the same, or a mix of paint and black chicks.

I had a hen for a while. She passed away a few months ago. I need to get him some more though. Thanks for the idea!

Yes, I will get a photo of it tomorrow... another thing I have is hackberries in the back, aka huckleberries, but not enough to bother with, and a small black cherry tree I saved from being destroyed by kudzu..

Had to take several shots to get plant and flower.. I had one growing up the mimosa tree but I hit it with the weed eater last week. The plant vines around anything near it.

it has the very slender leaves and looks like a fern of some sort.

So they are 2 days old
Some of them have like a little ring around their poofs on their heads...then some don't.

The splash on the left has little "line" but the white paint does not...

Aww that is a great video of the new little ones, congratulations on the hatch!

Ok so they are only 24 hours old roughly but if black wouldn't they be solid black? Several of em have grey fluffy booties and tummies and even white on wing tips!
Can't be mottled cuz they came from paint pen and BBS pen.

I can't speak for BBS (though I'm guessing it follows similar rules) but It's normal for black out of paint to have some yellow on some of the chicks. They can be all black but having gray undersides or yellow undersides and wingtips is common too. I believe it has to do with the e-allele they are based on. The best base for black (extended black or E) actually has chicks with penguin looking down, looking up black australorp chicks gives a good example of what E/E based black babies look like. I find the blacks I get out of paints match more closely to ER or birchen based looking down which has the lighter or yellow/white wingtips and some lighter underbellies but doesn't have as much white/yellow as the E based chicks. I've heard some black breeders preferring the chicks with more yellow to them as it means they may be on one of those bases where black is easier to make without leakage.

I doubt it is a sign of mottling but with paints being the newest recognized color and having a lot of color mixing in the past it isn't uncommon for them to hide a lot of recessives. Mottled hiding in paint lines isn't actually too uncommon, and recessive white and eb (partridge) is commonly hidden as well.

Hey u that have showgirls...can u tell soon as they are born of they are showgirls or not?
There was a chance of showgirls in this hatch and wondered if I had any or not!

Yes it should be apparent at hatch if you have any showgirls. I don't think I've ever heard of one hatching without the naked neck and then getting it later on.
