Ah, yeah; that would be an issue for us. We can’t keep roosters so broody hens won’t do us any good. We are looking for pets who also happen to lay eggs, and are hoping for the egg laying to be passably decent.

Honestly happened upon this thread on a lark, and was so surprised by the laying rate I had to investigate!
Well if there isn't a rooster, then the eggs won't be fertile, and no baby raising so there's that.

Holy cannoli. That’s impressive. Dang, that was my main reason not to get them - I think they’re delightful, and while I’d love an fancy rare breed or a bigger layer, we are urban and a smaller breed of chicken makes more sense…

Where did you get your silkies from?
I got mine from Atwood. They get their chicks from Ideal. Won’t get the best quality but they’re pretty good birds.

Think these two are culls. One has split wing and the other is always tilting her head to the right to look at things so I think she may have vision issues in left eye.

Culling out for pullets usually means sold as pets here. I do eat the cockerels

I wish I could butcher my roo. although I ate silkie cockerels this one is special to me. unfortunately he makes rattling sound (probably canker damage) and cannot be sold. his son looks a lot like him and he is the reason I'll keep some silkies for fun, not breeding. single comb chicks put an end to breeding.
