Hi, I've been reading threads on here for ages and finally signed up, so hi everyone!
I was given a silky rooster, only to discover he has throat canker. I started him on metranidazole, to then discover he has impacted crop!
I stopped the antibiotics and commenced oil and massage treatment on the 22nd December. He has done a couple of poos since then but still a fullish crop. His crop feels like play dough with rocks in it. I haven't been feeding him, only electrolyte water and a little apple sauce (today)
I'm worried he's going to starve to death?!
He is isolated, in a cage.
I'm contemplating doing crop surgery and then working on the canker if he makes it.
Advice and opinions would be gratefully appreciated.

You need to keep on with his canker meds because canker quite often establishes itself down inside the crop, too. That is likely what is aggravating his impacted crop.
Okay, I will restart the canker med....what do you think I should do about his crop issue? Don't want him to starve!

Try Greek yogurt or probiotics for now. If he is eating and drinking, he may not be that clogged. The probiotics can help counter any yeast that might be thinking of joining the party going on in his crop.

Check his crop each morning before he eats. This is the only reliable way to monitor his crop. If the crop is only partially full in the morning, that's okay. If you find his crop large, full, and hard, then he will need some oil. It may not come to that. Just take things a day at a time, but keep up with the canker med no matter what. Do you also have an antibiotic for him? Tylan? Bayril? Amoxicillin?

He's not eating or drinking by himself, I've been syringe feeding him for over a week. His crop does not change. It has been the same dough with rocks in it for a week now, morning and night. I don't want to feed him too much in case it just gets stuck as well...but I don't want him to starve.. I don't have other antibiotics, only metranidazole. I have access to amoxillan though..how much should I give him? And why? Is metranidazole not enough?
