Silly broodies

Congratulations on the new babies, Janet. My Glenda is now going into Day 18. She's done very well for a first timer, I'd say. Hopefully, by Sept 30, I'll have six little cuties under her. I have to move her, though. She's in the main coop and I need to move her to the broody pen that is in the Blue Orpington coop. Not sure exactly when to do that, though. Was thinking perhaps as soon as all the little ones are hatched or just before they hatch. It's warmer in that other coop and the pen is about 3.5' x 5', plenty big.

Awww seriousbill let her hatch just one more pleaseeeeeeeeee lol. I have 13 serama eggs under my bantie right now day 1 today 17 more to go

. It is more cost efficient to keep the seramas in the house verses building a heated and insulated coop that would keep them warm enough in sub zero temps, I just hope most of the babies end up pullets or its gonna be nuts around here in the mornings when ALL the roos start crowing at 5 am

Good hatching vibes to all

ive got a little oegb/rosecomb that has went broody im thinking about letting her hatch out a few babies

Today is day 19 for my broody. She has 7 eggs under her that she is very protective of. She lets me lift her up to peek though, haven't gotten pecked once.

Question: How long should I leave the eggs under her if they don't hatch by Mon. or Tuesday?

1 busted open a couple weeks ago and 2 I took away because they were still clear. The rest are still there and haven't exploded yet so I am hoping that means they are good. Those EE eggs are very hard to see into.

Thanks Cyn. Sounds like Glenda is progressing nicely. Best of luck with that hatch. Y'know, I usually wait to move them when all the babies have hatched, but this last time, I moved the pullet to the broody coop as soon as I heard peeping in the eggs, because she was on the top shelf of the nest boxes, and I was afraid the wee ones would fall.

Chickenaddict, it is a temptation, but I'm just not sure

SunAngel, I usually let chicken eggs go until Day 22, and then I candle to see if there's anything going on. Usually, if they've not pipped by late on day 22, they're not going to hatch, but I know some people let them go until Day 23 to be sure, especially if they don't candle.

Well, here's a rather blurry shot, but it's cloudy today and she keeps moving, so I doubt I'll get a better one.

One sad note related to this hatch. There is one little fellow whose face looks all bruised and battered, like she pecked him out of his egg. I think he was the last to hatch because they all looked fine last night. Anyway, his poor little beak is all purple and one eye is swollen. I may have to put him in an ICU brooder if he can't keep up with the others. She's a young pullet and may have gotten anxious and stressed about the late hatchling...

I love the color too.

I'm kind of worried about the one with the bruised face though...poor little thing looks pretty bad, but at least it's getting around and scampering with the rest now...

Here's another picture. You can't see the injury from this angle:

But you can in this closeup:
