anyone know what a cross between a Swedish blue and silver appleyard looks like? We have a female Swedish Blue that mater with our make silver appleyard and are just days away from hatching now. Couldn’t find anything online so ya we curious to see if anyone else has seen what these look like. Thanks you all!

These are ducks, right?

You're going to get blue bibbed and black bibbed babies that all carry one copy of restrictive mallard and one copy of light phase.

Yes ducks. Can you please explain a little what you mean by all that haha. I’m only one year in the duck keeping hobby.

Sure! So blue swedish are really easy. They're just extended black with one blue dilution gene, and that's what makes them blue. And of course they are bibbed - the white chest marking.

Silver appleyards get their color from the light phase gene, which makes their feathers lighter than a regular mallard. So where mallards are dark brown, silver appleyards are light brown. This is a recessive gene, so all silver appleyards carry two copies.

Restrictive mallard, as it sounds, restricts the superficial dark dorsal down color to the head and tail areas. That's why silver appleyard ducklings hatch looking like they have a black mohawk and tails.

So, your babies will be inheriting one copy of extended black from mom, and that's dominant, so they're all going to be black. However, half will also inherit her blue dilution gene, which will make them blue. And they will all inherit the bib, making them bibbed.

But, they will also be carrying light phase, though it won't express because it's recessive (and you couldn't see it under extended black anyway), and restrictive mallard, which is dominant but you can't really see on extended black.

Ok I think I understand what your saying now. Do you by chance have a picture of close comparison you could share of what these ducks could turn out like. They should be hatching by tomorrow unfortunately one was lost due to an egg breaking and looked very close to full development inside the egg so they should be close. 4 eggs left so hoping to get at least 2 or 3 out of them.

If I am understanding what Pyxis is staying your ducklings will look either black bibbed or blue bibbed. None will look light like the appleyards but some could be carrying one copy of the gene.

So if just research blue bibbed and black bibbed ducks , that’s a general idea what they’ll look like?

I don't know, someone that knows the genetics better would be better to ask. I think the color would be like the swedes, but body type will likely be a mix. I don't know much about the breeds to say for sure though. Now if the genetics are similar to other animals if you breed the siblings together or breed them back to the appleyard you will likely end up with a mix of colors.
