Single baby.

It does break your heart. I wonder where they all came from. Recently, at a farmer's market where I sell my jewelry, the director asked if I ever considered hatching and selling babies, like around Easter. I told her no way. That's the worst time to sell baby birds. Kids don't understand how to take care of them, how to treat them and they either end up dead or abandoned. She wasn't aware of that.

I was very fortunate to have a neighbor give me 4 runners 3 years ago. 1 drake and 3 ducks. I've gotten all my ducklings from them hatching myself. I know not everyone is as fortunate.

After reading all the horror stories on here about shipped ducklings I would never have live ducks shipped. Eggs, would probably be ok but not live ducklings. It just doesn't make any sense to me that they would be ok traveling all that way in a box getting thrown around in the cold etc.

That’s great you got to inform her.

We won't ever again. The way it is presented, and the videos of people happily opening up their boxes of active, peeping babies made it seem like things were fine. I couldn't do this ever again. It hurt so much. We were "comforted" by the company for our January batch that since it was the first hatch of the year, they may not have been the strongest babies. Give it a month and it will be much, much better. We did. And, to be honest, we probably would have had all three alive if it hadn't been for USPS hanging around in California for two days before heading to Texas. They got to us today, instead of the goal of yesterday. 24 hours could have made all the difference to at least one of the others, possible to both of the ones we lost.

You are exactly right! I made a huge mistake last year of selling my little sweet ducklings to idiots who didn't care for them the way I care for my little ones. I will NEVER do that again, nor will I sell any hatching eggs.

l only have 2 people that could have my eggs. @Runner duck mom and another person who were both great. They both couldn't be better duck parents but I'm not willing to take a chance with others that might not treat my babies like I do.

Oh DuckyDonna, if you were only closer! Our other 4 ducks are queens and king. I swear, they eat better and have better lives than half my family! We love our ducks so much. They are our children, especially now that both of our boys are gone (1 in college, the other about to graduate from military school in AL and then will enlist).

I wonder how far you are from Camp Hill, AL.....

I am glad you are so fiercely protective of your babies. If we ever allow our girls to hatch, I will be just as fierce.

I'm going to look up camp hill and see how far

Well, I actually live in San Antonio, Texas. My younger son is at Southern Prep in Camp Hill. We will be driving there in May for his HS graduation. One of those times when my brain goes, "Hmm, you know what would be cool..."
