So I only bought a pair of RIR's and one didn't make it through the weekend, now the other is crying (VERY LOUDLY) and escaping the crate she is in. I don't know what to do for her tonight to calm her down and keep her happy! I know she needs a friend and I plan on getting her one tomorrow, but tonight my family needs to sleep and its hard to do with the baby chick crying all night.

Thanks in advance!

My daughter and I were holding her here on the couch waiting for a reply but she just kept chirping, not crying, but definately wouldn't settle down. We are looking for a mirror now and there is a small fuzzy stuffed animal in the cage now. We put her in a box in the crate so she can't escape. Any other suggestions?

What kind of crate is she in, that she can escape from? I ask because if she can get out, the heat can too. She may just need a proper temp of 90-95F at chick level and a stuffed animal, no white lights on. Do you have a red light for heat that you can adjust the temps?

I raised a chick alone for 2 weeks, once he had food, water, warmth and a fluffy, stuffed toy to burrow under he was quiet.

ETA, just saw your most recent post- by handling the chick and having it in lights and sounds you are preventing it from sleeping. Even a nightlight will disturb chicks. Radio or TV really gets them going.

She's in a dog crate surrounded by cardboard on the out side, but she is jumping over the cardboard. The temps in the crate are ranging 95-98 degrees. She settled down in the box in the crate now. Never did find a mirror. Guess she will be ok until in the morning.

Well hit the local feed store this morning and they were out of pullets, picked one from the straight run crate, crossing my fingers I got a hen, because roosters aren't aloud in my area (and I don't want to make the neighbors mad). She is much happier with a mate! Thanks for everyones help!

I can't take credit for it. It was some great person on here that I read did it. I was horrified of only hatching one chick so I was prepared
