Sitting with a cup of coffee. (coffee lovers)

Oh and Good morning Everyone.... We have lots to do here. Grandma has to go to the Braille instituete to get evaluated.... Her macular degeneration went wet about two months ago and shes loosing all but her periphrial vision.... So they are going to see what kinds of reading aids she can get the best use out of...

This has been a hard one for her... She fell and broke her hip at 94 got a hip replcement within about 24 hours went to a recovery hospital for about two weeks.... two weeks of horror for me.... Gawd I hate those places that wearhouse old people... She came home and was doing for her own needs within about a month.... But at 95 she couldnt pass her drivers test.... a year off from driving took away her confidence..... she had driven with a license since she was 12.

So now her eyesite is going taking away the one great pleasure she still had.... Reading. We finally talked her into checking out the Braille institute (she was in denial for about a year).... And got her Audio books and a reader.... OH my goodness they had her favorite author too.... Nora Roberts. I am soo happy to see her happy again....

But now she wants to be able to read stuff like the bills and write a check now and then... So we are taking her in in about a half hour for an appointment with a specialist....

"In the Peets vs. Starbucks debate," I just drink what DH buys. That's what I had to do yesterday to find DH's coffee. He's the coffee person and I'm the one who's always losing or looking for something, but I was hunting the entire house and part of the yard for his coffee cup yesterday and I don't lose my coffee!!!! Go figure!

Glad you posted!!!

Now, that's just teasing!!! I want one too now!
There is no comparison between Starbucks and Peets. Starbucks will do as a latte but I will drink most anything to avoid Starbucks coffee black.

percolator coffee makers are still sold.

The moka pot is different:

water goes through the grounds once
The water is under pressure.

percolators circulate the water over the grounds repeatedly.

My favorite coffee pot was the glass vacuum pot that worked something like the Moka. The water was poured in the bottom and the coffee was put into the top shaped like a tulip with a long stem that fit into the bottom with a rubber seal and a filter. The water was forced into the top by the pressure as the water heated. Once the water was in the top the pot was removed from the heat and the vacuum sucked the coffee back into the bottom as the pot cooled. It made a good cup of coffee fairly quickly

I have one of those too!

I saw very old ones when we went on the under ground tour in Seattle Washington.

Deb, how about one of those magnifying glass lamps? Not good for a book, but just to look at a bill I think it might be worth trying.

Those are the kind that clamp to a table right.... Grandma will have NONE of that.... LOL... In her mind it has to be hand held. Unfortunately she needs at least 10x magnification

So we will go to the institute and if they tell her "magnifying glass lamp" she will do it no questions... but me tell her Um NO would be her answer...

so off we go...vbg

Deb, a quiet word with the person before he or she makes any recommendations might be a good idea too... (Sometimes you have to apply guerrilla tactics)

Talking behind grandmas back is a big NO NO. Grandma is 98 but she knows when an end run is being done with her. besides I am not certain the lamp idea would be the best for her... I am happy to let the "professional" do the work.

I try to help Grandma but everything I do is either unsuitable or wrong.... in her mind. I tried to explain to her that Generic Tylenol is the SAME stuff as Name brand Tylenol... She gets all sarcastic with me and says .... Well you just no everything about it don't you... and shuts me down.

So.... If someone else can convince her I am very happy to comply... I live with her 24/7 and would rather it be peaceful here

Some folks can see tv with the prism glasses - takes peripheral vision and makes an image that looks more normal, maybe those could help. My aunt also had some type of a reader which helped her see directions on pill bottles. But never found anything that would allow her to read books or magazines.

It is a frustrating problem.
