Sitting with a cup of coffee. (coffee lovers)

Perchie I totally agree! My oldest son is in the Marines and he said since day one that as long as they are going to pay for his education he will keep on getting degrees in anything he finds interesting. He has 6 degrees and is an officer and will retire in 3 years and he will only be 40. I always to my kids there is no limit to what they can do!

I, obviously...am proof of that.( sigh.)

But I LOVE knowing what family that particular insect that hit the windshield at mile maker 117 used to belong to.
No one writes me a check, but it's still cool.

"We may not always reach our goal, but there is recompense inn trying, our horizons broaden so much more the higher we are flying."

actually... going to college helps to broaden your mind, and you horizons.... and helps you be a better conversationalist/more fun to be around.

At least that is what I keep telling myself.

I remember Rocky and Bullwinkle... hehe

Nah... my undergrad was Range Science, and my masters was the same, but they had changed their name to be more PC, and get more students... Actually, maybe they changed before I got my BS??? Not sure....

Anyway, the PR change worked... it was wild. Before the name change we were all real ranchers... poor kids with old clothes, all guys in old jeans, boots, whatever shirts and really old cowboy hats or 'gimme caps' (one guy wore his grandfather's cowboy boots), the very few girls wore long, WAY past the knee skirts, usually denim. After the name change we got people wearing shorts, SANDALS, lots more girls, and guys WITHOUT hats!!!

It was funny, the Animal Science guys were the 'dime store cowboys'. They were the ones with the starched jeans that used up an entire can of spray starch on ONE pair of jeans, the fancy ironed cowboy dress shirts, ostrich skin boots and NEW hats! Those girls (again, not as many as the guys), wore more stylish clothes, and again more expensive.

Anyway.... it was kinda funny how very different each group dressed. It was a hoot.

I made a little bit of money in my field of study... but ah well..... not really.

Like Ron Said Masters of Fine Arts. Dean My son was studying for a Bachelors degree in Astronomy..... a BS or Bachelors of Science in Astronomy requires a minor in Math. This latest math class went too fast and too quickly over his head. they were covering Optics, Phsics, Vector Calculus, and Differentiation of Matrices.... He was doing ok till he hit the Matrices... This was a class that had been distilled from four semesters into one. And EVERY ONE who he know who had taken it had Failed. Even the Grad students Dean knew. Plus there were about a hundred and fifty in the class. Dean even said the Math majors didnt have to take that class. He had already dropped another math clas that was also required.

To fill in a class for his major he had one other general education class to take. So he took a Creative writing class. He can still go for a Batchelors of ARts in Astronomy which does not require a math minor. But he is soul searching if he really wants to be an Astronomy major at all.

During the Month of November he entered a contest called Nanowrimo... National Writers mOnth or something like that. Any way it was a contest where they were required to write a 50,000 word Novella in thirty days. The project helped him settle down from the Anxt of the math class. AND it got him focused on accomplishing something during a time frame.... He finished a day early and earned a certificate.

Duriing that time He was excellihng in the Writing class as well and recived many notes of encouragement from that teacher. His final assignment was to be something he had written on his own. So he chose the best chapter from his Novella. He cleaned it up from the fast writing for the contest (they dont check spelling or grammar) and submitted it. The teacher fell over herself with the complements... and asked him to make an appointment with her.

That appointment was eye opening. Apparently she felt his writing was good enough to go further with it. and Wanted to write a letter of recommendation to go for his Msters Degree in Fine Arts. He has to get his bachelors first and if he goes on the fast track for it in SOME sort of field he could do it in about two semesters. He is leaning toward sociology... But a MFA would allow him to be come just about anything he is interested in in the writing field. Journalism, Editorial work, Technical writing, Teaching, in any field he is interested in... Game story development would be a good fit. Or Novelist I have seen him focus and he could do it.

Right now with the exception of this ONE FLIPPING math class hes been earnging A's and B's His GPA has been a very high B for some time. All within the requirements of his grant money. Yep hes going to school Tuition free. As long as he keeps a full time status and a C average he goes to school free. So he can take a semester break they allow for that but he has to go back the next semester full time.

Now with the economy and no need to find housing or buy food he should be going to school. Thats his job.

Whew wrote a book. Oh and I am learning along side with him. I have been writing a book now for thirty years and to see my boy crank out 50,000 words in thirty days puts me to shame....

deb

He sounds quite impressive and I can identify with the problem he had with that class - dropped one course for similar issues and took it at another college. It makes no sense that most students at that level would flunk a course, so sounds like the professor is the problem. And those in administration should be questioning why this is happening and fix the issue.

I agree with other comments that we attend college for an education and feel strongly that if you follow your interest you will end up happy in life. I feel sorry for those who end up in jobs/careers that they hate.

I wish him success in whatever he decides.
