Sitting with a cup of coffee. (coffee lovers)

I will start golfballing them at the end of February then,
That will be around an April hatch... if the old ladies are up to it.
I have had someone offer to butcher them for me, so I could just start over
but...
The girls are my friends.

I'll be taking care of geriatric chickens thirty years from now won't I?

I'll be so old.
I need to re think EVERYTHING!!!!

Who am I kidding?
I go through this every year.

Another coop will do it.
The geriatric chicken coop.
I can see it.

And, unfortunately, chicken math is far from an exact science.
Case in point: The last couple of times I set Trader Joe's eggs I got maybe one or two chicks per dozen. Wanting to add an extra TJ pullet or two to my flock I set 3 dozen (chicken math is 2 chicks per dozen = possibly six chicks divided by 2 for 50/50 pullet chances.)
The three dozen eggs I set were nearly all fertile. I now have 26 chicks.....

I moved them into the brooder this morning while waiting for my coffee to brew. They seem much cuter now that I've had a cup....

Try finding eggs from a NPIP flock that should help. :)

They are so cute what kind are they?

Apparently Trader Joe's uses Hy-Line bird (genetically selectively bred leghorn types) and then some unknown roo, most likely a different color to make it easy to do a head count in the flock. Those of us who have hatched speculate the male is either a California Grey (leghorn) or an Australorp, but could be a Hy-Line Brown. I have one TJ pullet about a month away from POL and will have a better idea at that first egg. Cream = Australorp roo (so pullet is a type of Austra White) or white, which would mean a leghorn. I just call them production whites.

I guess the short answer is "I dunno for sure"

The TJ pullet that I have out in the coop from the Sept HAL is a real sweetie. Flies up onto my shoulder. Friendly. Wouldn't mind a few more like her at all.
