different sizes for one.... but there are conformational differences too. They are both Camilids....

Llamas (Latin name, Lama glama) are considerably bigger, and were originally bred as beasts of burden. They are believed to be descended from the wild Guanaco (Lama guanacoe). The Alpaca (Vicugna pacos) is considerably smaller, and has always been bred for the fiber it produces. It is believed to be descended from the Vicuna (Vicugna vicugna).
