Sitting with a cup of coffee. (coffee lovers)

Something kind of funny just occurred to me. Dh thought he was done with having chicks in the living room. We just got the last of them out about a week ago.

It celebrates Broody season. I just broke one this week and expect more any day now....

I am so proud of my mamas. So far so good. 6 chicks on the ground, eating and drinking. Not bad for day 3. Hope they keep up the work and protection from the other grumpy hens. These will be the first chicks in the flock but if they do well, I will let some of my other girls try. I am also working broody busters.

Best of luck with the wounded babies. I too think they will recover. We had one a few years back that we thought wouldn't make it. We just cleaned the wound and I put antibiotic ointment on until it dried up, kept her isolated and she came back just fine.

Congrats on your hen brooded chicks!

@TeaChick First, I wouldn't use antibiotics on them, but I'm sure you're aware of the risk with unprescribed antibiotics.

Then to the helpful part. This is Flappy when he was injured.

Maybe a week in:

After premature re-integration:

Flappy a couple weeks after being re-integrated:

Flappy last week:

What we did was that we first rinsed the wound with a mild Betadine solution (½ cup of water and 10-20 drops Betadine from the green bottle). Then we applied Vetericyn or Vetramil (a honey and herb based veterinary wound care product). We kept rinsing the wound daily with Betadin solution and applying either the Vetericyn or the Vetramil on the wound, alternating between the two. Just one of them would have worked just fine too, but I think the Vetramil assists in healing better, while the Vetramil keeps it a bit moister. After about a week, we moved him back out, only to return him later that day because it had been pecked open again. A week from that we moved him back out for good. As you can see in the last picture, you can't even see the wound anymore.
