Sitting with a cup of coffee. (coffee lovers)

Haha oh this is the best thread I've come across in all my 4 days or so of BYC life! We are actually military and just moved to NC late last year. I love it here. Originally from CA, but I don't mind if we live out here permanently

never would have been able to buy this house out there in CA, thats for sure lol! We've lived in Texas and Florida but I love NC the best. We are here for a good 6 years if not more and that's why we decided to buy and finally get our chickens. Told the hubby if he has to move he better plan on taking my chickens with us!!

we are planning a 12x12 coop (maybe I can talk him into a 12x16) and then a 12x24 attracted run. I'd love to let them free range but I got 2 huskies and GS that would love that idea even better

darn dogs! Haha it's a love hate relationship hahaha my husband and I have never built anything like this before so it will be interesting, I'll have to keep yalll posted... Unless it's a complete disaster in which case I will quietly excuse myself from BYC haha it looks good in my head though!

Ants... We are getting them inside but the kids love grabbing them and feeding them to the chicks! Seems like a win win for me, no ants, chicks get snacks and friendly up to the kiddos!

Coffee grounds... Adds sustenance to you cup of joe! I get them when it's time to clean out the coffee maker. Do you have hard water? at my families ranch they go through a coffee pot every couple years bc of the hard water. Gotta love well water!!

Here in San Diego we have hard water so hard it makes stalactites....

... Got in the habit of running some vinegar through the coffee maker every six months or so.... Keeps the calcium build up down.

Good plan start with twelve by twelve and run it so all you have to do is extend the roof for the next addition....

Soo I'm sitting her thinking... I'm approaching day 18 (Sunday) of my first hatch, 9/12 look like they will make it to lockdown.. If I take out turner and lay the eggs just there on bottom screen, do I not worry about turning them the last 3 days? What to do, what to do.... Seems like some take it out, some leave it. Some say lockdown is more of a guideline and still turn them, others seem to think its dooms day if you even think of opening the lid. Advice?

Don't turn them. The chicks use the last couple days to move into a good position to pip. At least that's what I have read and it worked great for me.

On day 18 you:

take out the turner
raise humidity to around 65%
set them into cut down cartons, hatching trays or put them on their side(use hatching trays or cartons for shipped eggs)

Limit the number of times the incubator is opened.

I hope you have a great hatch!
