Sitting with a cup of coffee. (coffee lovers)

@ApiaryandAviary

Not quite retired for SS yet.. I will be 60 in June. Never been married. Both Mom and dad grew up with Agriculture... dad moreso because his family were Share croppers. So even though I am a city girl I grew up with the stories. He hated farming so took to working with a vengance... always with two jobs so Mom and I had to do house repairs ourselves.

I got involved with horses when I was twelve and made much of the gear I couldn't afford... At the time I was very good with leather. I also made my own saddle pads. I have had horses now since 1967. just rolled over to 48 years.

I got my own first chickens 20 years ago when my son was five. Four Easter Eggers. I built my own first coop. Matter of fact I never had help... and or never considered asking for help... I rescued a dog from euthanasia and he killed all my hens... I eventually had him euthanized because he dug chewed climbed out of fences and through Plaster walls to get outside to roam the streets.... I was his fifth owner and I realized I would never make a connection with him.

I took a break from horses to focus my full attention on my son till he was about eleven. My dad passed away and I remembered him his whole life regretting that he couldnt fly planes again. I felt the same about being away from horses... So I decided to buy Katee.

Shes a Percheron Draft horse and I bought her off an add on the internet in 2000. Had her shipped from Washington state to SAn Diego Again by hiring off the internet. People thought I was nuts... Maybe I was. I live an odd life... She was six years old and only green broke for riding... 30 days of training does not make a trained horse.... only one that is familiarized with the gear and someone getting on them ... and oh yea pull on one rein to go this way and the other rein to go that way and when they both get pulled it means stop.

it didnt matter I was going to train her to pull a carriage any way... I finally scraped up enough money to get help.

I bought my land to give my horse a home... odd way that worked out. Like I said Odd life for sure.

So Now I have eighteen plus acres of unfenced desert land. and a REALLY big horse corral about an eighth of an acre. and space to build a chicken coop.

Woo hoo Thats when the adventure really began.

Son didnt want to move with me so he moved in with his Great Grandma... Hight School was here in town.

Now hes going to SDSU on pell grants... Started out as an Astronomy major but is switching over to something else because he couldnt deal with one math class... Long story that. Hes 25 now. ANd I am living with Grandma as well.. She is going to be 99 in July.

One day I will go back home and have chickens again and go out in the morning to skritch my horse... She turned 21 this year...

Deb, sounds like you lived your life your way,.. sort of. I love people. I am not seeing enough people. This farm we bought in my home state is too isolated. I remember farm life and dont remember it this isolated. I remember as a kid walking with my cousing Jimmy and a friend Butch. Walking? Well running to steal apples from another farmer. Why? We could get them for free from our aunt. I remember hoe sweet those watermelons were that did not come from a store. Why? We could get them for free from my aunt.
I remember A tomato factory that had walls of screens. Not solid walls. The farmers came from all around and dumped their tomatoes into a hopper and it was weighted and the tomatoes went down a shoot and were sent into a hot water vat and down a shoot to be peeled and onto be mashed and canned. All screened. No air conditioning. It was hot and steamy and the workers drank bottled coke that sat in tubs of ice and ate (whatever fruit management supplied) watermelon, cantalope, apples or oranges, baloney and cheese sandwiches every day. I watched them and talked to them all season long. The managers knew all their workers by name and had gone to school with them.

I loved the desert. I loved Yuma. I loved to take a cherished walk in the spring early mornings when the desert floor came alive.

I miss the good old times and yet I love my ice maker, an little mobile phone. If I could have the 50's and 60's back and be able to have my cell phone and ice maker I would do fine.

ok, I guess I need more coffee since I can't seem to work my fingers this morning. Been using an old coffee can to bail out the coop we are in the middle of finishing and he digits are chilly. It has no roof yet, and we might as well be in the rain forest with all this stinking rain! I know we need the moisture, but sheesh! My girls are never to get outside at this rate. They are going to be indoor kitchen chickens!

We got rain yesterday, that was AWFUL started flooding the basement, and all the coops! So there I was, digging trenches all over the place trying to keep flooding to a minimum, had to keep my head uncovered too because the ducks and chickens spooked when they saw me with a hood.... Stupid birds.

It is AWFUL! If it could just stop and let the ground dry in between storms to lessen the flooding. The only real issue we're having is not being able to finish building our coop. I'm in CO and we always get rain in the spring, but this is way beyond the norm. I think we've gotten like 5 or 6 times the normal amount this month alone. In fact, I think I might be getting webbed feet!

70o F and muggy on Saturday, much needed rain on Sunday, apple trees bloomed on Monday, woke up to snow covered ground this morning and a freeze warning (which means temps in the low 20's tonight) for tonight and tomorrow night. There goes the apple crop, again, sigh.
Someone tell me again why I didn't want to move

So sorry for everyone getting too much rain

The one thing we never have to worry about. Our property drains like a sieve, even in the hardest downpour. We also built on the highest point on our property and our lowest is a floodplain that literally slurps up water.
