Hi everyone! Thought I would pop in to say Hi. Been a busy week that is about to get busier. The guys that will be doing the roof AND the new windows called yesterday pm to let us know they will be here tomorrow! Gee,, thanks for the heads up guys. We spent all day today moving furniture, dragging the bed out, etc. to clear everything away from the three huge windows to be replaced because they will have to work both inside and out. We are going from the separate outer storm and inside windows to a good quality INSULATED double hung windows!

This is going to require them to redo the sills and sashes so I will actually have real window sills

. They will also be putting on the steel roof and swear they will have it all done by Friday pm which is just about right up to the end of our clear weather window before the next storm system rolls in. While they are doing that and I am trying to keep track of all the critters and keep everybody safe (and no escapes) DH will be putting up a new 12 ft post he's going to sink and attach to one of the posts supporting the front porch to remount our satellite dishes (yes, there are two) to that are being removed from the roof. The satellite tech will be showing up Saturday to re-mount and align em.
Oh, and did I mention that yesterday one of my Aussies went broody and as of today I have two broodies??? TWO!!!

Crazy chickens! This is the northwoods and it's August you crazy birds, August!!! We are very well about eight weeks away from the first snow! Pushed broody #1 out of the nest box last night and and she hit the floor with a thud, not even an attempt to stand up. She just flattened out looking like a roadkill bullfrog! I scooped her up (glad I wasn't able to understand the names she was clearly calling me at this point) and parked her on the roost bar. Since it was near dark and everybody else had went to roost, she stayed put. This morning when I opened the coop people door she came charging out squacking at the top of her lungs and flew all the way across the yard. A little later when I went to change the water dish I keep near their favorite cherry bush where they love to dust bathe, she was flattened out so much I didn't notice her until I heard a noise coming from under the bush. There she was, flat as a bullfrog again, giving me the "I dare you" look and growling like she full intended to take my hand off if I tried ANYTHING!

Little did she know I took advantage of her dustbath to block her from being able to get to the nestboxes. I was rather proud of myself and my ability to outsmart her until I discovered broody #2 firmly planted in the second nestbox.

They couldn't have waited till after all the chaos in the house was done? That does it, I'm cutting off their mealworms!!!

Have fun with the remodel... it's always "fun" while in progress.

Maybe ya shoulda left em be.. they'd be sitting and not bothering anyone (other than anyone coming near). The Welsummer I brood broke last month is at it again. This time I'm letting her sit, but only on a couple of eggs. I really don't need any more cluckers at the moment. I've got cluckers that are 5 weeks up to 1 1/2 years old. Freezer camp is going to be crowded this year. Top of the list are the two "mothers" since they are supplying their replacements.

Well, turns out I was wrong about having 2 broodies. I just wasn't paying close enough attention, sigh. Turns out the second one wasn't broody after all, she was sick. She seemed fine when I shooed her out of the nest box yesterday pm and her normal self this morning or as normal as any of them were behaving with a bunch of strangers running around putting on a roof. They all went into hiding as I expected but later when I went out to check on them and give them a treat, Gravy didn't come out from under the bench. Odd. I scooped her out and put her on my lap where she promptly closed her eyes and went to sleep as I rubbed her crop. Not her at all. I eventually put her in the coop and hours later she was standing exactly where I left her. She finally now is laying down in the straw on the coop floor. I don't expect her to be alive in the morning. She is showing no outward signs, no wheezing, no limping, no hard crop, nothing except when I first put her in my lap I noticed her comb was tilted over and her one wing was trembling but stopped as I stroked her and of course the total lethargy. I am at a loss. Why am I losing my birds? The symptoms don't match up (Noodle who died a month earlier had an on again off again bad limp w/o reason for month prior to her suddenly going down hill and gone within 2 days). My girls are healthy happy hens until one at a time suddenly they are not. Oh, and the 3rd red I had that I gave to my neighbor a couple months ago possibly died the same way this one is going. She has some reds from the same batch of chicks mine came from so she isn't sure which one died. (She doesn't pay much attention to who's who in her flock) What I am afraid of is my rescue birds had more than just the CRD I worked them thru and were carriers of something worse. They were never fully healthy no matter how hard I tried and either died or had to be culled one by one. My last rescue has been gone more than a year now but both Noodle and my 3 production Reds were here before they were gone. Anyone have any ideas? My Cackle Aussies are 15+ months old now and have been perfectly healthy, except for taking turns being broody. I just hope whatever is taking my other girls is just not going to be passed on to them. I'm down to 4 birds going into winter but I just am afraid to add any more until I know for sure what is going on. ARRRGH!!!
