main problem is no one has stated whether or not this will be effective on the new strain since this one was previously unknown.

Just received an update.

As of today there are a total of 245,163 infected turkeys and they are in the process of "depopulating" 153,000 laying hens at a facility that was not infected but was in too close proximity to an infected turkey flock. Depopulated, don't use just love government speak? They also already have or in the process of, "depopulating" all the infected and suspected turkeys. No update on whether any sites beyond these 10 plus the chicken farm has been identified. Their major focus and concern still seems to be identifying whether or not this strain bares a threat to other species, including us.

AVIAN INFLUENZA UPDATE! 1. Small backyard flocks within the surveillance zone are now being tested. 2. 27 backyard flocks were found within the surveillance zone. 3. 155,000 commercial laying hens that tested negative are being destroyed due to proximity to the infected turkey flocks. 4. A total of 401,163 birds have been affected. 5. Currently, depopulation has been completed at 6 of the 10 turkey flocks. 6. Mental health services are being provided in Jasper to those who have been affected by the HPAI event. I'm waiting for a call back from USDA-APHIS in Washington D.C. to get any current updates. I will keep you posted as new information comes my way. CW
