It is no fun having to treat our flock for any bug..
I added a extra scoop to grind for coffee this morning.. But now having a beer.. We will be brewing this winter.. Do any of ya all brew & give the spent grains to your flock?? We started a new thread.

Supposedly lots of people up here feed their chickens spent grains. They are supposed to be full of nutrients. I keep meaning to ask the local brewery if I can have theirs.

A balmy 48o this morning. Should get up to mid 50's!!! No wonder my girls have all stopped laying

So, I'll just tell you all about yesterday....
I butchered three of my five Leghorn-mix cockerels (well, they were crowing, but I call them cockerels b/c I wasn't going to keep them, so they weren't going to be flock roosters....

anyway)
Also, my little six week Marans cockerel was dead in the brooder this morning. I'm not surprised; he was acting sick and nothing I did helped him. Such is life with chickens....

I hate losing them, especially to illness; it makes me feel like I did something wrong, even though I take good care of my chickens and I do everything I can for each one when they're not feeling well.

I candle my eggs from the 'bator tomorrow night; I'm beside myself.

three in one session is a good enough processing day for me, planning on three more early tomorrow but not before two cups of the brew.

one of my two silkie hens hatched three brahma large fowl last Saturday, now I can see how long it takes for the babies to gather under her wings and pick her up.

planning on expanding the cages, probably add 240 square feet, now how do I construct a cage that can withstand mountain lions, a pair were spotted five miles from our home, maybe the big cats will be content with road kill.

My covered run is about 295 sq ft. The original 5 x 13 plus an new 17 x 13.5 addition I'm still working on. It's taken me over a year but I'm almost done. I used steel roof panels to close the top and heavy guage 2x4 fence wire on the outside and have 1/2 x 1/2 inch hardware cloth to put on the inside. I used 4x4 posts and then 2x4s to make removeable fence panels. It's all screwed together with construction screws where needed for strength and deck screws everywhere else. I think for the big cats you will probably need hog panels? Maybe?
