Sitting with a cup of coffee. (coffee lovers)

Thanks to all the blessings!!!

I am getting chickie blessings. We have 11 hatchlings today.

And my friend who gave me some of the eggs brought me a duckling.

I have no idea what to do with a duckling. Any advice?

I have been successful putting the ducklings in the brooder with the chicks. Once they are feathered out I provide some water for them to bathe in. For over a year a kiddie pool has worked well. My ducks are Mallards. I have a Drake that is just now growing his adult plumage in. I can see an increase in the head plumage daily.

You needed the rest. I am sure they will forgive you.

Awww, thank you

I think I really did need it. But, NOW I have to get moving! Just taking a break while I let all the scrubbed out chicken water containers dry and get a bit of extra sunshine "cleaning" before I refill. (like taking advantage of mother nature with the black rubber ones). There has been a full week of not much but the basics getting done around here and as Alaskan and SCG can attest to, that is just not a great idea to waste any good weather in our short summer. There is just too much that needs to be done in and to the buildings, fences, basically anything that is not inside the house before the cold moves back in and by the looks of how the sun is already hanging lower in the sky even at midday, that is not too far off. I also have to make sure everything is set for the chooks to spend the day in the run on Monday. I want to open the gate for them between the main gate and the greenhouse garden area so they have more room to play but I need to fence in the potato plants or I have my potatoes harvested before me!

My neighbor has agreed to come lock them in just in case something happens where we don't make it home before dark. Good neighbor

Ok, time to get back to work! Have a blessed weekend everyone!!!

Oh, and super congrats on all the successful hatches and the ducky

Yes, the coffee is really good this morning! Dh did my cream and sugar today. :D

Also, I have a chick (5 days old) he's sleeping more than the others, peeping more than the others, smaller than the others, but when I pt him in a box- by himself last night, he went nuts, so I put him back in the brooder with the others. He had loose stool dried to his bottom (pasty butt ?) yesterday, so dd gave him a warm bath to get rid of it.
Is it pasty butt? If not, what do you all think it could be?
Is that contagious? Should I separate him or maybe put him in this evening with the mutts I should have coming out of the bator today?
is it life threatening? Should I dispatch him now to save him suffering?
Help!

Me, I would add a little bit of tiny sand, or PDZ if you have some, to act as grit (I find it stops pasty butt) I would check the bottom at least once a day, to see if it has repasted. I would also make sure the chick is actually eating, and check it for walking issues. Maybe it is a splayed leg, or something that is making it uncomfortable.

Depending on how in pain it is, and if any specific cause can be found... I would probably give it two days, and then dispatch if there had been no improvement.

Good afternoon all, getting a late start.

Late starts are good! :D :caf

when in doubt, separate! Potential cocci? Are you feeding medicated or regular chick feed?
Check with the

Ron or Dawg53 to be sure for they are far wiser than I
but my personal approach would be as follows;

A. if already feeding medicated feed I would separate and give Nutridrench in the water,
if feeding unmedicated I would
B. I would start a round of Corid.
(or possibly C. Stop the medicated feed, switch to unmedicated and start the Corid)

I'm feeding unmedicated.
They're getting unmedicated feed, VitalPac in their water, and I do have Corid, but I don't know if that would mix with the VitalPack already in the water or not; If anyone knows, please tell me.)

Hi! and
welcome-byc.gif

We always get a late start on Saturday around my house. =)

I have "play sand" in the bottom of the brooder (like litter) and they're always eating from the bottom of the brooder. Should I mix it directly into the feed?
I think he's eating (apparently he's pooping). I stick his beak in the waterer every time I go over there (which seems to shut him up for a while).
He is a little wobbly, but not much more than the other chicks; he's the wobbliest, but not by a lot. (Does that even make sense????)
He doesn't seem to be in pain.
I'll give him two days to show me some improvement (as you said) and await your suggestion on mixing the sand directly into the feed or not.
