Yeah, I've had a time and a half of it this year and last. I'm not getting those chicks from that hatchery anymore. Other chicks from the same hatchery, I haven't had a problem with, so I don't want to give anyone a bad name. And that breed is great otherwise, from other sources and on other property. I guess I just have the wrong kind(s) of cocci for that particular strain.

I'll have to talk to DH about that nipple water system. Do you have them mounted on 5-gal buckets or on PVC pipes (or does that even matter)?
Yeah, I've got to buy more Corid; I'm out. Not a good thing to be out of on my property. Thankfully, I don't have any chicks right now, but I've got a broody due this weekend.

I have a 5 gallon bucket with a float and a hose for the layer pen. I have a two gallon in one of the breeding pens that I fill. For the chicks, they start on a small bottle that sits in a hanger in the brooder tub

I would have you try the Dominique. They don't usually go broody until 2 years of age... But a few do go broody at one.

Coffee for all! Nursing a new Morgan mare here that got bitten up yesterday by the herd...

a good salve surprisingly is plain old lard. keeps the wound soft and the flies off... Not bacongrease because its got salt and meat bits in it.

I used to mix into the lard a good antiseptic foot powder for a homemade salve... Betteryet If you can find Sulfamilimide powder mix that in instead of the foot pownder. If you find the sulfa Do NOT use it on deep wounds... but either are great for bites and scrapes where the hair has been removed and the skin is oozing but not really broken.

for what its worth I water with recycled rubber tubs and a float valve. all open air... I have never fed medicated anything nor have I had to treat a flock for anything but mites....

Tubs are easy to clean... I flip them over right in the coop (dirt floors) and give them a swipe with a toilet brush (designated only for tub cleaning) and dump them again then set them to refill. i cleaned once a week.

each pen has their own so there is no cross contamination...

Both the tub and the valve are intensely rugged and can handle hard freezes... Nice part about the tub is even if it freezes hard the slope on the sides allows you to dump out the ice. yep they walk in em Yep they poo in them yep they kick dirt in them and perch on the sides... Though I learned to buy a small resin table and set it over the top... kept the perching and pooing part down...
