Wow!

I once had a necropsy done at a vet school... I am pretty sure it only cost 10 to $20 bucks... Something like that.
yeah, I know. You would think since we pay for the university system with our tax dollars we would get a few benefits, nope. We even pay thru the nose for soil sample testing. Our Gov Walker is trying to get things changed. He already hit the teacher's union hard primarily in the university system, breaking their iron clad tenure system and no school can now force someone to join their union. This year he forced them to cut some of the padding especially in areas where professors were hiring too many students to do their work for them by making them more accountable for their budgets or lose some real funding. Our extension system has become a joke unless you are a commercial grower, etc.

The Animal Health and Food Safety program is run off of Federal grants. It has nothing to do with individual Sate stuff.

Thanks everyone.  This wasn't really as bad as losing my miss Noodle.  I had been close to her for over 3 years.  She was the first hatched actually on the property and was like my little puppy with feathers (that loved to "sneak attack" land on my shoulder).  Miss Gravy was always my little sweety but I really didn't expect her to live to a ripe old age.  She had too many problems as a pullet.  Also, unlike the unexpected loss with miss Noodle where zi actually only got a few moments to hold her in the evening only to find her gone in the morning, with Gravy I had plenty of time to make her comfortable, cuddle her and even to say good bye.

Ron- Thank you again for the info.  Your simplification helps to clear up a lot.  I was giving myself a headache trying to make sense of all the conflicting info I was getting online.
As for a free necropsy, unfortunately very little is even close to free thru our university system here in Wisconsin. I had checked into it years ago when one of my original rescue birds died oddly.  It was expensive and complicated then so I can only imagine it's worse now.

Sweet poultry - thank you :hugs Wow, are you blessed!!!  A vet the not only will see your birds but loves poultry too???  There is little hope for me finding one.  I have contacted every vet within a couple hour's drive of me and nothing.  Our last last animal vet retired several years ago so now anyone with livestock has to haul them to a couple hours south   .

Thanks, Oh well wish you the best of luck

Also I'm quite angry due to the feed store "No refunds, only changes" policy, when I wanted to return the cockerel they said they would change it for a day old chick, that's not fair, they sold me the guy for the double of the cost of one :(

Good Morning everyone!

I wanted to share something that I fear might be a bad situation for backyard chickens in years to come.
I was having dinner at my sisters house yesterday and my niece, who is 14, asked her if she could have a chicken. I told her, no, you can't have just one chicken as they are flock animals and you need at least 2, preferably 3. This request was prompted by the chicks that she saw for sale in the mall at the pet store. Now, I'm all for people raising them for eggs, food, pets, etc. and I hope more people start, I'm just afraid that now with chicks being sold at the mall, there is going to be a bigger problem with abandoned chickens than there are rabbits at easter.
I hope I am wrong, and I hope that the people buying chicks at the mall are prepared and have done some research and don't pick them up on a whim due to extreme cuteness.
I told my niece if she is serious about having them, she can come over and help with mine to see what's involved in their care before she gets them.

I just hope we don't need a chicken rescue group here in the next few years because there are enough other animals needing rescue, we don't need to add to the problem.
Thanks for letting me vent!
