Sitting with a cup of coffee. (coffee lovers)

Any vet can do the float test--Collect a zip lock sandwich bag of poo and tell the vet it is from a cat....It is the same test.

In the $10 to 15 range.
Thanks Ron for the idea!
BTW- NOTHING is in the $10 to 15 range around here when it comes to vets/drs. They would charge you for calling them if they could figure out how.
You remember those free necropsies that you get? Remember what I said the "free" ones cost here? $100 base fee+++++ and they have to be sent in by a vet who charge you for doing it, etc. etc.

Hi everybody! I'm a ridiculous coffee freak so I thought I would fit right in here!

I also love funny coffee posters/sayings etc.

And to top it off I like to talk about anything!

Can I come over to play?

Oh, and I love bacon!
Hi Bridebeliever!!!
Pull up a chair, grab your cup and "roost" with us for a while. There's always room for one more!!!
Come on, spill the beans, tell us a bit about yourself. We're all good eggs here (tho, shhhhh, there are one or two that might be just a weee bit cracked

Good- although late- morning here. I was up late canning mushrooms.
Someone left a huge mess in the kitchen. ( It might of been me.) but it can wait a bit longer until I drink my coffee.

Can you learn how to do a float test yourself?
Microscopes are expensive, but from the sound of it, a visit to the vet would pay for one.
Self diagnosing is more desirable than not being able to afford to do it at all.

I think there is going to be a lot of medical care both human and vet ending up in the hands of non professionals, It has gotten too expensive.
I see a homegrown movement already with herbal and other concoctions our great-grandparents used.
It was all they had or could afford also.
My dad say he had to be really miserable before he said anything because horse liniment was the cure for everything.

I was going to suggest this too!

There are some on BYC that do their own float tests. You may be able to get one at a fairly low cost used from a University. It would pay for itself because you should do a float test 4 times a year.

Microscopes are available all over the place now a days.Any aquatic supply catalog has affordable microscopes, and you can find rebuilt ones as well.
I have a stereo scope that goes down to 7X so it can do as much as I need.
I only use one eye- so the 'stereo' part is kind of wasted on me.

I've used our microscope for a fecal test. Unfortunately, ours is really old and has low powers, so when I could finally see close enough to look for parasites, the slide shattered and spread glass on the floor

yeah, that is a no-no.
Remember getting fussed at about not doing that is Biology?
I was fearful. I was terrified of authority.

My husband has this really old one that has a mirror that you use to reflect light up under the slide so you can see.
Do not get one of those no mater how good the deal is.
Get one with the light switch in the base.
and at least three lenses.

I just assume they have worms and they get wormed once a year.
I should look.

Yes, this is my thought. I just plan to worm them in the spring and fall. Let's face it...worms and parasites happen! You wouldn't want to put your own doo under a microscope guaranteed!

You can do your own fecals for horses I know lots of people who do.... and its a good education.... There are books on the subject and lots of articles on the internet. the following is a google search... key words DIY fecal testing

https://www.google.com/search?q=diy+fecal+testing&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

fecal counts usually only show eggs.... x amount of paraisite eggs is normal... y amount of eggs time to worm. Its helpful to know what species you are looking at.

The following discusses the whole process for goats.
https://fiascofarm.com/goats/fecals.htm

probably the best site I have seen so far

http://www.microscope-microscope.org/applications/animals/fecal_analysis.htm

and links to identification

I'm always really careful with the slides, but sometimes I take the risk of possibly breaking it, if I might be able to see a parasite. Figure it's worth it if it saves a chicken. Yeah
