Six by 8 coop plans?

Thats great advice. Really getting to see the size will help... but even then, once the walls go up and it all closes in, it feels smaller than you thought

When we remodeled the kitchen in our old house we used blue painter's tape on the floor to draw the layout of the cabinets and appliances. Then I pretended to cook meals to make sure the workspace flowed properly.

I would just make it 8x8, since sheets of plywood are 4x8. Less cutting, more space.

That was the next thing I was fouling to recommend... check the sheet plywood sizes(4x8) and try and make it those dimensions. You can always find ways to reuse the scraps, but it does make it easier.

Hi I'm looking for ideas or plans for a coop that's 6 foot tall, 6 foot wide and 8 foot long I'm expanding my flock and need to build a bigger coop, I purchased a prefab the first time around and just can find one large enough that wouldn't just be cheaper to build lol
Just a coop as I free range and already have a run with the current coop. I have an idea in mind but I'm not sure if the idea will work when actual construction comes in to play lol this will be the first thing I've ever built like this before so the easier to under the better!

Im using 4x4 and 4x8s for holding/ mating pens and I move them around for fresh grass. Working well even with 20-30 degree night Temps here in Nc

I actually lucked out and theirs someone local selling and 8 foot by 12 foot coop that needs some minor repairs for $75, I live in Georgia for those that asked and have 11 chickens total that will be combined into the run and coop once the 30 day quarantine is over for my new hens, I'm also trying to have a large enough building to prepare for taking in 10 more hens and three on the off chance my sister and her husband ever decided to get rid of their flock. I also want atleast 4 more chickens myself lol I figured if the coop I'm picking up isn't large enough for that I can always build an extension on to the existing structure.

Coop size really only matters if you don't intend to let them free range and supplement feed. Example im using a 8x10 with a door for my RIR. With 3 roost bars at 6ft plenty of space for them to roost and move about. But everyday they are let out into a 1 acre fenced pasture.

That’s great!!! How lucky! I think, as long as you’re creative and stagger/space the roosts sufficiently, an 8x12 should be enough for your chickens! Especially since you’ve got a nice big run!

To maximize square footage in my coop(8x10), I use elevated poop boards under my roosts. The ground/floor beneath the roosts stays clean, and the chickens can utilize the whole footprint. I also elevated my nesting boxes, so they can go underneath them. Just be sure to put your highest nesting box below your lowest roost... even if only by a few inches But I’m not kidding, poop boards make a huge difference. I only have to clean them once a week, and as long as I take/fluff up the pine pellets on the floor at the same time, I only have to change the floor 4 times A YEAR. It’s crazy.

I may have missed it, but did you say how many chickens you will be increasing to?

From my personal experience, I built an 8x10 elevated coop, and although that’s sufficient for the maximum number of chickens we would have, I wish I would have gone bigger, even just by a little. Especially since space already turned out to be an issue for your goals of expanding! If you’re already building a bigger coop, bumping up to an 8x10 gives you options down the road... be it to expand your flock once more, or incorporate storage or brooding space. Just something I wish I would have considered!!!

Also, as far as ideas/plans, what type of environment are you in? What’s the terrain like? What’s the weather like? I’d love help brainstorm!

Haha yes it does! What’s your plan/situation/goals/etc?! Fill me in! I’d love to help if I can! I’m happy to be done with my main coop, but love living vicariously through the builds of others
