skinned alive -update 18/4/2011 the update we didnt want :(

Hard to tell if the feathers will grow back, but I had a quail and a chicken with injuries that exposed bone and both completely recovered and the skin and feathers grew back. I hope Holly's do to...

I was thinking of you and Holly and I was glad to see the new pics! You did great! I am so glad she made it! She's lucky to be alive. I'm very glad you didn't cull her.

I am sorry that this happened to your poor girl. Chickens seem to be very strong creatures. My silkie was just scalped today and I was wondering if I am being inhumane to keep her alive. She doesn't seem to be in pain. I washed it and put neosporin/pain relief on it and I put her in the brooder with the babies. She started cooing to them right away. She is very sweet and I will only put her down if I think she is miserable. I will treat her two times a day. I may try to get her some antibiotics. I also added some showbird feed to her food. I thought that may increase what she needs to heal. I know the feathers won't regrow, but she still needs to heal. I will be watching this thread to see how your girl heals. Good luck.

I had a hen with exact type injury two years ago. I put her in a dark quiet place. I gave her droppers full of sugar water. I also used stuff I use on my horses starts with a f and its yellow. Forget what its called. Its a thick oniment. I put it all over the wounds and wrapped with vet wrap. It took a long time but she healed and was my best layer. She also grew most of her feathers back too she was completely scalped. I saw bone. Was not sure I would be able to save her, but i did. Good luck.

It's called Nitrofurazone dressing. I use it on my horse too it works great. It comes in a black tub with a yellow lid.
I am so glad she is doing better!

my horse vet asked me not to use it any more. said recent studies have proven it to cause cancer. dunno if thats true but I stopped using it

I just wanted to add that 3M makes over the counter gel pads for burns, now. They may not be available in your area, and you probably don't need them by now. I would keep up with saline flushes and antibacterial ointment to keep the scab as flexible as possible. Aspirin probably wouldn't hurt, either. Also, make sure she gets plenty of fluids. Wounds like that can cause dehydration from the wound weeping. I also second the ideas about silver and/or honey bandages. There have been studies on both and they're proven to be effective.

You are a good chicken Momma.

im not actually keeping the wound moist or washing it anymore...ive been letting it heal by itself and its doing great. i do however check on Holly a few times a day to make sure theres no debris or muck sticking to the wound. she's been outside with Drake for he past 2 nights now on the sheltered terras, and seems much happier than being caged at night. part of me is wanting to get her back in the flock but i know i must be patient, just one peck from another chicken could take us back to square one! i was even contemplating making her a sort of neck/head scarf out of a childs sock but i think its just safer to leave her out on the terras for another couple of weeks....! the flock have already probably forgotten her by now. when the time coms how will be best to reintroduce her? just bung her on the roost one night or slow introductions through chicken wire? i feel a bit cruel keeping her qwith Drake, although he's only half her size they are quickly becoming inseperable...and well Drake is up for rehoming shortly (he keeps attacking my kids so i have to get rid of him or my fella is gonna cull
