SLAUGHTERING QUAIL

I think the main issue here, sixshooter, is where people have raised quail or other animals, as pets ,like a cat, dog, or horse. In my mind an effort should be made not to get attached to animals intended for slaughter. I've had some pretty unconventional pets, so I can understand this and I'm sure I'll get a little attached to my breeder birds. But like Bfrancis said my birds will be seperated into breeders that are ok to get attached to and the birds I'm growing out to sell or butcher.

thats how i have all mine right now as well, One coop of breeders that are my pets and i play with. and another of all pharaoh colors, purely for meat/money/eggs.

i did butcher some today, one bird freaked me out. i guess it was egg laying time, i didn't pay much attention to the time when i was doing it, so as i remove the head and start to peel the skin off...what do i feel....an egg in the body UGH@!!@!@ so i gotta push that sucker out GAH now that was freaky.

Kinda weird! I'm going to sex all mine and butch / sell all the males as ready to process birds and all the females will be sold as layers, with the exception of what I hold back as replacement breeders.

I must be heartless or hardened.... when it is time to butcher an animal for any reason, I just do it and get it done be it food or a pet.

That said, of anything to butcher, quail have been so far the absolute easiest! I just pop their heads off in a bag with my hands. They are small enough to hold with one hand and it's so fast they don't know what happened.

No massive wings to the side of the head like a 50lb turkey who tore the bag it was in, no slippery feet like rabbits, no stiff bones like an old chicken... and no barbed hook to the hand when the fish decides to flop around and throw the hooks.

Wow! Those pics are making my mouth water!

Seeing fresh food like that, you know raising and processing yourself was well worth it

Not enough money 'til it comes then I've got arrangements made with quaillady for 72 A&M and asst. Tux. eggs. Some of those will be my breeders for the new line I'm planning.

Well, I read this thread strictly because I want to get some quail and start raising them for food, eggs and to sell and my biggest questions were, HOW do I butcher them and CAN I butcher them. You guys have helped a lot with that. As well, seeing them cooked helps with the CAN question, lol. Thanks so much!
