Thanks all. Well Bill, it figgers that you would want to know about the guts, so I took some "pitchers" for ya. The first pic is of the fan and heating element. The element is one of those wire springy things wrapped around some insulators. The fan runs constantly. It's an old school fan, and has a couple of tubes for oiling the shaft.

The second pic is of the "brains". It has a wafer thermostat that is tied into and alarm/ buzzer that warns of a temperature failure. It has an old type screw in fuse, and a switched light bulb that is for lighting only.

After doing a little research, I found that this one is a Brower Model 624 Redwood Incubator, made by Leahey Incubators, a company who has made redwood incubators for over 100 years. They made incubators for Brower, Sears Roebuck, and many others over the years.

One day, hopefully soon, DH is planning to build a cabinet bator and another as a hatcher. WE got the plans from somebody that builds them to sell. My question is....we plan to use an electronic thermostat in both. Would it be likely that with the electronic thermostat to hold the temp that if we put them both outside in the shed. Our shed is ventilated to where we can keep air flow so it don't get too hot in there.

I've seen posts where a person used an old refridgerator for a bator and hatcher and it stayed outside in the elements and they hatched chicks in the winter with snow on the fridge. I don't want to put it where the hatch rate will be lower. I can put it in the house where the temps are more stable. I know with the LG's and hovobator the inside temps matter with the bator temps. Right now we have them in our spare bedroom with an airconditioner on low set on 74 and the energy saver on. It helps keep the bators mostly stable. In winter we use space heaters and I leave the bedroom door open with a small fan hung on the door to bring in heat. I always have humidity issues because of the heat but I babysit them and use sponges if necessary.

We plan to move sometime this year to a house that has central heat and air. But for now I have to deal with what we have. I want to be able to hatch out lots of quail to sell and put in our freezer.

Oh, the element we're going to use is the type that has the insulators not the wafer. I also bought 3 fans that are used in computers. We're going to put 3 fans in each bator and hatcher. We have caulk we're going to put on the edges of the plywood then screw them in place to keep out any drafts besides the vent holes that will be put in. The door will have that strip insulation so it has a good seal when it's closed and the latches to hold it locked down in place when closed are those that one would use on a tool box or tackle box. If that makes any sense. The door will be clear like plexiglass. The bator will have 5 turners and the hatcher will have 3 drawers.

Any input will be appreciated. DH will be getting laid off soon and will have no excuse to not have time to get it made.

But when he gets that lay off slip it's on. lol I can use all the information I can get.

If I were lookin to build a cabinet bator, I would hump JJ 's leg till he posted pix of
The one he just built. The guy he got his from may sell Plans on line too... Its a fine cabinet unit. He had pix up at some point .... BTW, your climate would be a factor in the shed deal should work n normal weather... Bill

Short Of Using A Fridge For The Cabinet Itself I Wouldnt Put Them Outside. Anything Else Is Going To Influenced By The Ambient Temperature Swings And Will Effect Performance And Hatch Rates Ultimately

And Bill, If You Start Humpin My Leg I'll Beat You With A Roll Of Newspaper... If That Doesnt Work The Shocker Collar Goes On...

Well... Folks tend to pay attention to what your say'in if there's a big hairy fat man clamped on their leg like a poodle in heat...
