Smaller chicks bullied to death... I think. Need to expand our coop.

The hoop coop looks really cool. We actually have some cattle paneling here on our property from the previous owner. The previous owner had a bunch of makeshift jerry rigged fencing up for gardens and past animals he owned, he even used mattress springs as part of the fence. I've been in the slow process of getting rid of it all...
Might be a great option then. Gotta love a good junk pile. Much of my coop came from my barn loft.

We've figured out a permanent solution. We have a shed that is just full of junk that the previous owner left. We're going to convert it into a large coop this weekend. I'm looking forward to starting work on it. I'll start a new post and post pics of the progress when we start working on it.

I think it'll end up working out really well. =)

That will be a really nice henhouse once finished.

I've been looking at the coop articles, and I see a lot of really good ideas, but I haven't found any so far that have really clear plans that a layman like myself can follow.
Look for plans for a shed to build the basic structure..add larger roof overhangs with open soffits for ventilation.... roosts, nests, etc are pretty easy.

For sure keep the cattle panels! So useful, and expensive.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. It is heartbreaking to loose chickens that you worked so hard to raise. My husband and I NEVER both leave overnight. It's either one or the other. We have four dogs, one that needs medication daily, two chicken coops and runs and 28 chickens. We really can't trust others to care for our animals the way we would. It's just a sad fact that no one cares about your animals the way you do. The shed looks like a great coop for your flock! Good luck!
:hugs

Do you think you can build a predator proof run with your hardware cloth and not even have a coop to run door that you have to open daily? That would certainly make overnight travel, dates with the spouse, short trips etc a lot easier.
