Pure silkie to pure silkie won't produce a smooth feathered offspring nor a non black skinned offspring.
IMO you did get scammed.

Does anyone have an explanation of smooth silkies?
I hatched eggs from someone a couple years ago. From those eggs I got 1 really nice small blue hen, but she feathered in smooth.
I've been hatching eggs from her as well as the rest of my flock and the last hatch I had 3 out of 5 feather in smooth.

How does this gene work in silkies? Is there a reason to keep it in my flock or should I cull for it?

(I only have them for fun, don't show. But do sell eggs for hatching)

I know this thread is old, but I’ll stick my 5 cents in. You have satins. Previously called sizzles. Smooth satins. Can throw smooth, frizzled, silkie or frizzled silkie feathers. And gorgeous, your are. !!

Satins are silkie type with normal feathers.
Sizzles are silkie type with frizzled feathers.
Satins won't throw frizzled unless bred to a frizzled.
Satins won't throw silkies unless they carry a silkie gene and are bred to a silkied bird or one that also carries silkie gene.
To throw a frizzled silkie they must carry a silkie gene and be bred to a bird that is frizzled and silkie or frizzled and carry a silkie gene.

I have some satin silkies, so based on what you are saying, if I breed them together I can get some silkied silkies?? That would be great. I also have some frizzle silkie Cochin mixes, if I breed them together can I get a sizzles? Or would it be some frizzle and some silkied, not both on one bird?

As long as both the hen and roo satin silkies carry the silkie gene (no real way to tell unless you know they both had a silkied parent or you do a test breed) then yes, you would get 25% silkies (the other 75% will look smooth but some will carry the silkie gene).

Your frizzle silkie cochin mixes may give you some frizzled silkies but they will need to inherit two genes for silkie feathers as well as one for frizzle which makes it less likely to happen. You will have to be careful not to breed two birds with frizzle feathers together (regardless of if they are silkie or smooth) as you could get frazzle birds as already mentioned earlier in the thread. It depends on who you speak to as to whether your frizzled silkies are sizzles as i think "true sizzles" would also have other silkie feature eg black skin, 5 toes which may or may not show up depending how much cochin is in the mix.
