We use that bird netting over our pen. Pine needles & cones always foul it up & it's easy to replace. It's bunched up around the sides.
I was in the pen, dumping the dirt out of my kids bowls. I heard something above me. Checked it out and saw nothing. (I was remembering the post here of the giant snake in the rafters)
I came back later to put fresh grain down and noticed something awry. Something awfully L-O-N-G awry.
Of course, I shrieked like a little girl. Then I ran to get my camera!

Mr Rat snake got hung up in the netting. Did a bang up job of getting stuck.
I guess he might have come out of one of the trees.

He did not survive his brush with the netting. I had seen the pictures here of other snake encounters with the netting.
It was over 6 foot long. That big of a snake puts me into hyper spazz mode.
Little ones - no problem. Giant anacondas? Big problem.
We had been missing eggs. Now I know why.

As long as they stay away in their rightful place...all is ok....but if they get by my chickens, it's another story......

Tis a pity it died in the netting. A six foot plus long rat snake has some age to him.

I encourage the non-venomous snakes around my place. They keep the rats down which is worth the loss of an occasional egg.

I don't really mind the non venomous ones, much, I was overheard by nice neighbor telling out black racer anything outside the run was fair game, but NO GOING INSIDE. He came over to see what I was talking to and said he has killed three copperheads this week. Having lost two cats and a dog to them and spent $$$$ on vet bills on horses who stuck their noses too close, poison snakes do not survive in my yard.
Yes that was a sad way for such a big snake to go, but egg eaters are bad.
