Well drat. I didn't know snapping turtles could climb several feet of cage to escape.

Brought one home late Monday night to cook up for dinner. Nice 15 pounder or so. So I put her in one of the old dog crates I have out back. Didn't have a top, but since it was several feet tall, I figured I was fine. Wrong!

Come home from work Tuesday, get all the butchering gear out, and go to get supper. It's not there! Oh, this is peachy. Somewhere in my nicely penned barnyard, complete with a pond, I now have a good sized snapping turtle lurking, wanting to lay her eggs. And she's got a nasty disposition, even for a snapping turtle.

Sigh. As my wife said, while laughing at me, boy if you're going to screw up, you sure do it right!

(Don't know whether to laugh or cry!) Well, I hope you had some eggs to cook up! Good luck...or should I say...BE CAREFUL!!!

OH NO!! Those things can be so dangerous. We have LOADS of them here...nothing a good shot wont take care of. I dont want them in my pond, we have baby ducks. Bite size for a turtle THAT size. Ohhh, I hope you find it soon!

Here's a picture of one that was visiting the chickens a few weeks ago. That's my cell phone on it's back to give a perspective on how big it was.

It finally went back to the creek:

Boilerjoe also said they make a tasty soup.

`Nasty dispositions' yaaassssss. Alligator Snappers are the reason I gave up skinny dipping in the strip pit ponds around here a couple of decades ago.

They are very tasty if cubed and pressure cooked. Every few years an old moss back will migrate into our pond (do bad things to little grass carp) and we'll Dremel and surgical prep blade it into a stew.

Hope you find it!
