sneezing,swollen eyes, fowl smell

Your birds have Infectious Coryza. Coryza is like a bacterial, really bad "cold." I've read that Tylan 200 is suppose to help. It's available at TSC if you have one in your area.

In addition to the above, you may also wish to consider adding electrolytes to their drinking water to help give their immune system a jump start to fighting off the infection.

Good luck

Symptoms may go away but they will be carriers for life, so if you keep them then you'll need to quarantine them until they die naturally. I'd cull them, disinfect the area, and start a new flock in the spring. So sad when this happens. :(

Coryza bacteria are only infectious in the environment for around 3 days. Direct contact, contaminated drinking water, and airborne droplets are how the disease is spread. Cleaning and disinfecting facilities, and waiting for a few weeks to repopulate with new healthy birds is the only way to get rid of the disease. Testing is the only way to know for sure what you are dealing with. Sorry for your losses.

So when it comes to the rest of the chickens. If they show any small indication of the sickness would it be a smart move to separate until culled and keep it up until no one has problems?

Getting your sick chickens tested would help Here is a link for the state vets in the US who can talk to you about the procedures to go through to get testing or a necropsy. Also here are some good articles about coryza: to read:

I would just use bleach on the inside of the coop and all food/water containers. The sun/wind/rain should disinfect everything else.

Eggcessive knows the real world stuff, I just read a lot. He says it may only take a few days for Coryza to die off when exposed to the elements, but there is no way to be 100% sure they only had Coryza. If their breath was bad and their eyes goopy then it most likely is Coryza, but they could also have MG, bronchitis, and/or other stuff that takes months to die off instead of days. So like he said, a necropsy is definitely warranted--or you can just wait until spring to get more chickens, which is when the chicks will be easily available anyways. I think that more than a few months of time should kill off every disease out there no matter what it is.
