I just loved the deer hunting thread that reminded me of hunting snipes. We grow 'em big down here in the South. You can't use a paper bag...you need a big ol croaker sack. A flashlight and you have to stand just right to catch one. You need to be under a hickory tree and whistle just right....

Anyone ever been snipe hunting???

Share your tips and stories on catching the famous snipe ~

Ummm, yeah as a teenager I went snipe hunting in the NC mountains but it wasn't my fault!
I grew up part-time in NC and part-time in Florida and in Florida, there is such a bird called a snipe. How was I suppose to know better?

I always heard that standing on one leg and holding your mouth just right was a perfect invitation for them to just jump into your ole' gunny sack!

My sons go to Boy Scout camp every year and they come back with snipe hunting stories every year! It's funny to listen to them.

Oh, the GUNNY SACK!!

I used to run a dude ranch in CO---it was a pet project of our Housing COmpany's owner.

ANYWHOO--every year the sent the women employees of the homebuilder up to the ranch (men on a diff trip). It was always great fun getting the newbies a little tipsy and then sending them out in the brush.

We got our new receptionist once...21 and never been out of the city. They made her put on waders, a trucker hat (for protection), and gloves. Then everyone scattered while she made the **chip chip sqeeel!** sound. She crawled around in the bushes for HOURS before someone took pity on her and "caught" a snipe. They gave her a gunny sack full of rocks and leaves & took her picture. She figured out it was a fraud when the rocks clacked.

Funniest thing ever. She scowled at the female employees for weeks!

Looking for picture!

Actually there is such thing as snipe hunting they look some what like a woodcock they have a long beak and you find them in swampy areas.

We can hunt them during the waterfowl season and they taste like dove.
