So did I just kill 30 chicks??

Sevin Is Not A Very Effective Pesticide Especially The 5%, However It Is Going To Be Taken Off The Market 2011 . Small Amts. On Your Chicken Probably Would Not Hurt..i Have Freely Dusted Some From Time To Time Without Any Problems.

I'm not sure what makes you say that. It works quite well in my experience.
When the fleas got ahead of the Frontline, I dusted the dog and cats to get them back under control. I've also used it a few times on the chickens, both youngsters and adults.
To me, it kindof burns my sinuses (a mask would be a good idea) so maybe it feels that way to the chicks as well. Fortunately it's a short term problem and I bet they'll be fine by tomorrow.

lol, I thought that was a good line.

Anyways, Any new developments on the little chicks from the op????? are they still alive? are they still twitching and such???

I checked on them and gave them fresh water and by mornign they seem to be back to their perky selves. So a huge relief on my end, of course. So I am not debating, do I dust my adults? They are free range and have almost a half pasture to roam. I know that the chicks must of gotten the lice from the adults so I don't want this problem with bugs to continue.

We dusted all of ours with no problems but we were careful not to get it in their face or in their eyes, I put DE in their nesting boxes layered with the pine shavings as well. I also used it in the run and around the outside of the coop. I hope your babies are better, but if you want to get rid of the problem I would do the adults too ) good luck!

There are a number of products which will kill external parasites of chickens. Rotating between a variety of the ones that are effective against the bugs your particular birds are experiencing will help prevent development of resistance to the pesticide.

My experience and that of many others is that Sevin is quite effective; to the point that there is concern that it kills too many "good" insects, in particular honeybees. Use to control external parasites on animals is a per label use.

I will say that for on-animal application I prefer sprays to dusts. I do put sevin or permenthrin dust in nest boxes (especially when a hen is brooding eggs or chicks) and areas where the birds tend to dust themselves. I will put it underneath bedding, but am leery of putting any sort of chemical pesticide where they search for and sometimes find food. However, I spray all wooden parts of their coops with an alternating set of chemical pesticides, one of which is sevin. I heavily mix DE into bedding materials, which helps keep them dry and also helps prevent bugs. I regularly use ivermectin pour-on on my birds, and as necessary bathe them in flea/tick shampoo (which also kill lice and mites) or use spray.
