I suspect you are right. This breed is a high energy breed and alot of people think they are just pocket dogs to show off. They need outside time, play time, a play mate and attention. No problem for us!!!

It was all because some in need of publicity seeking wanna be stars were using these little dogs as fashion accessories. I don't understand why some of these people aren't contacting the breeder that sold them the puppy in the first place. I have never placed any of my puppies without being clear that I will take them back for any reason, and would even go as far as fostering them until thing get better for the owner. The breeders need to be doing a better job of making sure that the new owners know that the breeder will help out if it ever come to a place where dog might need a safe place to live for awhile.

I will completely agree that the market for little dogs has softened. I am still looking for homes for 2 male Yorkie pups. I have had no problem with getting homes for the girls, but the boys have been a real problem. Every one seems to want a 2lb female for next to nothing. I also am keeping one of the older pups. He has a very strong bond with me.

She's adorable, Deb! It's great that even though you hated Chihuahuas, one could win you over - I would've kept her, too!

I'm not a fan of the breed either because my neighbor has 6 evil, rotten purebred dogs with Little Dog Syndrome in spades. Their dogs get no discipline; they are fat, mean, nasty, bark at us all the time and as a pack will charge us in our yard and have cornered my kids before. I have had many words with them over their dogs. I know it's just the way the wife has raised the dogs that makes them that way and a little dog raised by you will be a sweetheart!

Very few are pet surrenders. Unfortunately its the breeders that are dumping there dogs to ether get out of it or to make room for the next breed fad.

People over breed an flood the marked. I don't think many of them really understand "supply an demand." A flooded marked is never good. For the good of the dogs an the breeder, demand should always be higher than supply.

So I haven't read all the posts, but....

Have you taken him to the vet to have him scanned for a microchip? Or put an ad in the paper or on Craigslist? Not trying to be the bad guy, but I'm sure you'd want someone to do those things if one of your animals got lost.
